The punk rock band Rise Against was established in 1999 in Chicago, Illinois. Current band members include Tim McIlrath (lead vocalist, rhythm guitar), Brandon Barnes (percussion, drums), Joe Principe (backing vocals, bass guitar) and Zach Blair (backing vocals, lead guitar).

For the first five years of their career Rise Against was signed with Fat Wreck Chords, an independent label. They released two albums with them: 2001's "The Unraveling" and 2003's "Revolutions Per Minute." The albums both achieved great success in the underground music world. In 2003 Rise Against signed with Geffen, a major record label.

Rise Against advocates for several progressive organizations like It Gets Better Project and Amnesty International and are also animal rights activists. All the band members are vegans and straight edge.

Rise Against released "Siren Song of the Counter Culture" in 2004. The release brought them mainstream success and spawned several hit singles. in 2006 Rise Against released "The Sufferer & the Witness," the band's fourth album. It debuted in the No. 10 spot on Billboard's 200 chart. Five singles were spawned from the album: "The Approaching Curve," "Behind Closed Doors," "The Good Left Undone," "Prayer of the Refugee" and "Ready to Fall." In 2008 "Appeal to Reason," the band's fifth album, was released. it debuted in the No. 3 spot on Billboard's 200 chart. The three Geffen released albums all were certified gold in the U.S. and platinum in Canada. The band's latest album, "Endgame," was released in 2011.

The musical style of Rise Against has been described as hardcore punk, punk rock and melodic hardcore. Some of the band's main influences include Cave In, Down By Law, Screeching Weasel, Face to Face, Black Flag, Minor Threat, Anti-Flag, Nirvana, Social Distortion, Bad Religion, Refused, Dead Kennedys and Descendents.
