puscifer Biography

Tool and A Perfect Circle lead vocalist Maynard James Keenan created Puscifer in 1995. It initially sported the name Umalut, but changed it to its current name by the time he announced its conception on an episode of the now-defunct HBO series, ‘Mr. Show’. More than just an independent side project, Puscifer served as the Tool front man’s “playground for the various voices in my (his) head…a space with no clear or discernible goals…where my (his) Id, ego and anima all come together to exchange cookie recipes,” as posted in the act’s official website. The act’s sound would range from experimental, to prog-rock and post-industrial rock to trip hop. Keenan would create songs, album art covers and even collectible merchandise bearing explicit catchphrases, images, song and album titles, song lyrics and even short films under the Puscifer banner, all driven by his “creative subconscious”.

Keenan is the only constant fixture in Puscifer. For years, he worked with tons of various musicians to come up with two studio albums, three remix albums, two EPs, six standalone singles and seven music videos. He also collaborated with various artists of other media, such as cartoonist and fashion designer Paul Frank to produce a line of Puscifer leather jackets, visual artist and musician Adam Jones who worked on Puscifer’s shirt line, most of which bore explicit catchphrases such as “Your Mom’s a Bitch”.

Although Keenan has been working on Puscifer since 1995, it would take 12 years before the act could release a full-length studio album. ‘V is for Vagina’ surfaced in October 2007. It entered the Billboard 200 at no.25 and topped the Billboard indie charts. It moved 112,000 copies and spawned three singles, ‘Queen B’, ‘Trekka’ and ‘Mamma Sed’. The album was followed by its remix version, ‘V is for Viagra. The Remixes’ in 2008; a six-track EP, ‘C is for (Please Insert Sophomoric Genitalia Reference Here)’ in 2009; and its most recent release, the full-length effort ‘Conditions of My Parole’, which hit the stands in July 2011 and charted at no.27 at the Billboard 200.

Puscifer’s official website, www.Puscifer.com, contains everything a Puscifer fan must know and must have, from Keenan’s blogs detailing the act’s gigs, current activity and side stories, to online streaming of the act’s songs and music videos, to various merchandise such as artworks, clothing apparel and even locally roasted coffee.
