primus Biography

The American rock band Primus was formed in 1984 in El Sobrante, California. Original band members included Les Claypool (vocalist, bassist) and Todd Huth (guitarist). Later Jay Lane (drummer) joined them. However Lane and Huth left the band in 1988. In 1989 Primus released "Suck on This," their first album, with LaLonde on guitar and Tim "Herb" Alexander on drums. The band released "Frizzle Fry" in 1990. Interscope Records then signed the band to a recording contract. In 1991 Primus released "Sailing the Seas of Cheese," their major label deubt. The album went gold. Primus released "Pork Soda" in 1993. The album debuted in the No. 7 spot on Billboard's Top 10 chart. In 1995 the band released "Tales from the Punchbowl," their fourth album. It spawned the song "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver," which was nominated for a Grammy Award and to date is the band's most successful single. In 1996 Alexander left and Bryan "Brain" Mantia replaced him. Primus recorded television show South Park's original theme song as well as two additional albums: 1997's "Brown Album" and 1999's "Antipop." In 2000 the band went on a hiatus. LaLonde and Claypool reunited in 2003 along with Alexander. The band released an EP/DVD called "Animals Should Not Try to Act Like People." Lane replaced Alexander in 2010. Current band members are Les Claypool, Jay Lane and Larry LaLonde. In 2011 Primus released "Green Naugahyde," their eighth studio album. Primus is known for their quirky, irreverent approach to music. Their musical style is hard to define. They have been referred to as progressive metal, funk metal, alternative metal and alternative rock. Influences of Primus include Pink Floyd and Frank Zappa. Bands that have been inspired by Primus include Pleymo, Muse, Limp Bizkit, Korn, Incubus and Deftones.
