Primus, Orbital On Deck for Asheville’s MoogFest

The lineup for the third annual Moogfest has been announced, and includes heavy hitters Primus and Orbital, organizers announced recently.

The two-day festival that celebrates the legacy of electronic music pioneer Bob Moog will take place October 26-27 this year in Asheville, N.C. The extensive lineup is once again extremely eclectic, welcoming a wide spectrum of artists rather than just electronic musicians.

In addition to the aforementioned headliners, the lineup will be fleshed out by Miike Snow, Santigold, Squarepusher, Explosions in the Sky, Thomas Dolby, the Magnetic Fields, Julia Holter and GZA. The latter will be performing his classic album Liquid Swords in its entirety.

Last year, the event was held over three days, and was visited by around 30,000 concertgoers. Bob Moog is best known for his development of Moog synthesizers, which revolutionized electronic music. His company, Moog Music, is headquartered in Asheville.

“It’s really about Bob Moog’s spirit of innovation,” Matt Hendrickson, director of marketing for the festival, told the Asheville Citizen-Times. “In previous years, and this year, there are artists that do not use Moog synthesizers; that is not a requirement for us.”

He went on to say that the idea of the festival is to welcome those artists doing their part to advance the music industry, much like Moog did.

“It’s more about pushing the envelope,” he continued. “We want to provide this mind-melting experience that’s really pushing people to discover something they didn’t know about.”

Hendrickson says the decision to cut the final day of the festival has to do with a drop in attendance on the final day of the event last year.

“A lot of people weren’t able to take Monday off from work and missed the Sunday (lineup),” he said. “We wanted to give people the opportunity to really be able to have a full sort of weekend.”
