Polyphonic Spree Head Down South for First Tour in Four Years
Polyphonic Spree, the Dallas choral and symphonic pop band that often features a lineup of at least 20 members, is set to undertake its first North American tour in over four years. Throughout mid-February, the group will undertake ten performances spread throughout the southeastern United States. The tour will kick off in Tulsa, Okla. at the Marquee on February 6 and continue until February 16, when it will close with a hometown show at the Sons of Hermann Hall in Dallas. In between, the group will play Norman, Okla.; Little Rock; Atlanta; Tallahassee, Fla.; Birmingham, Ala.; New Orleans; Houston and Austin, Texas.
Known as the “You + Me” tour, these dates were labeled by the band as “Phase One” of the tour, and the group’s Facebook page promises an additional west coast and east coast tour of America, as well as dates in the United Kingdom. No official dates for those tours have been released.
The group was formed by Tim DeLaughter in 2000 after his previous band, Tripping Daisy, ended when the guitarist died of a drug overdose. With an ever-evolving lineup, the group currently features 21 members. In addition to traditional instruments like guitar, piano, bass and drums, various members also contribute flute, cello, violin, trombone and trumpet to the songs, written or co-written by DeLaughter, who also serves as lead vocalist. Some members only serve as part of a vocal choir. The group also features a wide variety of former members, including Annie Clark, who has gone on to have a successful indie rock solo career under the moniker St. Vincent.
The Polyphonic Spree released its most recent album, The Fragile Army, in 2007, but has kept busy since. Members wrote and performed the opening song for Showtime’s “The United States of Tara, which aired from 2009 to 2011. Additionally, the group released an interactive music video app in July 2011, featuring the group’s most recent single.
