The American rock band Phish is known for their extended jams, musical improvisation, exploration of a wide variety of musical genres, and very devoted fans. The group was formed in 1983 in Burlington, Vermont. The current lineup was solidified in 1985. The four members of Phish are Page McConnell, Jon Fishman, Mike Gordon and Trey Anastasio. They performed for more than 20 years together before they broke up in 2004. In 2009, they reunited and have been performing regularly again since that time.

The music of Phish combines elements from a wide array of different musical genres, including hard rock, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, rock, jazz, folk, funk, reggae, bluegrass, blues, country, barbershop quarter, avant garde and classical. All of Phish's concerts are original, with different songs being performed in different ways and in different orders.

Phish has received very little mainstream exposure or radio play, much like the Grateful Dead, the band they are most frequently compared to. They have developed a dedicated and large fan base mostly through word of mouth and the exchange and trading of tapes and live recordings with other fans. Phish has released 14 albums along with a live concert series called “Live Phish,” many live shows and six videos. The band has sold more 8 million DVDs and albums in the U.S.
