Phil Collins Quits the Music Business

Phil Collins is apparently upset with recent criticism.

The famous drummer and singer for the group Genesis has decided to retire from music due to health issues. In an interview with FHM, he indicated that his body has rebelled after years of crouching over a drum set. He has a dislocated vertebra, hearing damage, and problems with the nerves in his hands that make it painful to play the drums. But, according to Collins’ publicist who held an interview with People, “He is not, has no intention of, retiring.” Is it possible Collins will come back?

No matter what he intends to do with the rest of his life, Collins has released 13 hit songs, won seven Grammys, and won an Academy Award for Best Original Song that he recorded for Disney’s Tarzan in 1999. Collins stated, “I’m sorry that it was all so successful. I honestly didn’t mean it to happen like that. It’s hardly surprising that people grew to hate me.” Collins has been subjected to much criticism in recent years. Noel Gallagher, guitarist for Oasis, made one of the harshest of remarks when he said, “You don’t have to be great to be successful. Look at Phil Collins.”

Collins is currently living in a small Switzerland town and wants to get away from the music industry. The interview with FHM seems to solidify his decision to leave the music world behind. He said, “I don’t really belong to that world and I don’t think anyone’s going to miss me. I’m much happier just to write myself out of the script entirely.” He also indicated that his decision was based in part on the fact that musicians today only want to be famous and couldn’t care less about the actual music.
