The American rock band Pearl Jam was formed in 1990 in Seattle, Washington. The lineup of the band, since its inception, has included lead vocalist and guitarist Eddie Vedder, bassist Jeff Ament, rhythm guitarist Stone Gossard and lead guitarist Mike McCready. Matt Cameron, the current drummer who also plays with Soundgarden, has been a band member since 1998.

After Mother Love Band, the previous band of Gossard's and Ament's broke up, Pearl Jam was formed. The release of “Ten” in 1991, their debut album, helped break them into the mainstream. Pearl Jam during the early 1990s was one of the main bands that helped to shape the grunge movement. Early on they were criticized as a corporate sell-out from the explosion of alternative rock. Over the band's career however, members have become known for refusing to follow traditional practices within the music industry, including the refusal to record music videos and boycotting Ticketmaster.

Pearl Jam over the course of their career have sold more than 30 million U.S. records and approximately sixty million worldwide. The band has released 9 albums, with the latest “Backspacer” being released in 2009. They have outlasted most of their contemporaries out of the early 1990s alternative rock scene and are considered one of that decade's most influential bands.
