neko case Biography

The American singer-songwriter Neko Case was born on September 8, 1970 in Alexandria, Virginia and grew up in Tacoma, Washington. She is a solo artist in addition to being a member of The New Pornographers, a Canadian indie rock band.

For several years, Case toured and record under the name Neko Case & Her Boyfriends. She now performs under her name solely. She performs mostly her own material, although she has also recorded and performed covers versions of other artists' songs like Hank Williams, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Queen, Randy Newman, Scott Walker, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Nick Lowe, Tom Waits, Loretta Lynn and Harry Nilsson.

In 1994, Case left for Vancouver, British Columbia and attended Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design. She was the drummer for several local bands, which included Maow, Cub, the Weasels, the Propanes and the Del Logs. Case graduated in 1998. Before leaving Canada to move to Seattle Washington, Case recorded vocals on a couple songs that wound up on “Mass Romantic,” the first album by The New Pornographers released in 2000. The set was a surprise success and the band went on tour and has recorded a total of five albums. Case has also toured and recorded with Carolyn Mark, the Canadian songwriter and singer, under the name The Corn Sisters along with another group The Sadies.

As a solo artist Case has released 5 studio albums (two with Her Boyfriends), 1 EP and 2 live albums. Her debut set “The Virginian” was released in 1997. Her other studio albums include 2000's “Furnace Room Lullaby,” 2002's “Blacklisted,” “2006's “Fox Confessor Brings the Flood” and 2009's “Middle Cyclone.”
