The heavy metal band Motley Crue was formed in 1981 in Los Angeles, California. The band was formed by Nikki Sixx, bass guitarist, and Tommy Lee, drummer. They were joined later by Mick Mars, lead guitarist, and Vince Neil, lead singer. The band has sold over 80 million worldwide copies, including 20 million US copies.

Motley Crue band members are known for having hard living lifestyles. Each band member has had several run ins with the law, including jail time, had numerous encounters with women, suffered from alcoholism and drug addiction, and are all heavily tattooed. In June 2008 Motley Crue released Saints of Los Angeles, their ninth album.

Too Fast For Love, Motley Crue's debut album, was released in 1982 by Elektra Records. They released several other top selling albums throughout the 1980s that were a mixture of glam rock and heavy metal stylings, including 1983's Shout at the Devil, 1985's Theatre of Pain, 1987's Girls Girls, Girls and 1989's Bob Rock with themes of decadence, sexual escapades and substance abuse. After releasing Decade of Decadence, a compilation album, Motley Crue's popularity began to wane and band members left the group and spent time pursuing solo projects.

A reunion tour with all four original Motley Crue members started on February 14, 2005. Red, White & Crue, a compilation album, was released in 2005. The band also co-headlined a tour with Aerosmith in 2006. Saints of Los Angeles, Motley Crue's latest album, was released in June 2008. In 2011 the band will be touring with Poison as well as special guest New York Dolls for the 30th anniversary of Motley Crue and 25th anniversary of Poison.
