Morrissey Reveals Coachella Promised to Go Vegetarian for Smiths Reunion
How important would a Smiths reunion be? Apparently important enough for Coachella to go entirely meatless.
In an interview with Australia’s Herald Sun a few days ago, Morrissey revealed that the organizers of the Coachella music offered to present the 2010 event as entirely vegetarian if he headlined with guitarist Johnny Marr under the Smiths name.
“[I]nterestingly the agents for Coachella offered a 100 percent vegetarian event for the following year if I would agree to headline with Johnny Marr as the Smiths,” Morrissey told the newspaper. “Fascinatingly they made it clear that they would ‘not require’ the Smiths’ bass player or drummer… which I thought certainly said something.”
The question related to Morrissey’s 2009 Coachella appearance when he interrupted his set because of the smell of meat in the air.
“I can smell burning flesh and I hope to God it’s human,” Morrissey said from the stage.
Back in 2006, Morrissey said during a South By Southwest panel that Coachella had offered him $5 million to reunite with Marr, according to Billboard.com, but he feels the band ran its course long ago.
“It was a fantastic journey. And then it ended,” Morrissey said at the time. “I didn’t feel we should have ended. I wanted to continue. [Marr] wanted to end it. And that was that.”
Of course that hasn’t stopped the rumors that the band will reunite. In fact, just yesterday the site holymoly.com revealed that “several credible sources” are reporting that the Smiths will reunite next year. The site listed three rumors they have heard:
- “It’s a done deal.
- Dates are booked.
- Glastonbury is one of four dates, presumably the Saturday on the Pyramid stage.”
However, a representative for Morrissey quickly put a stop to the rumor with an email to HitFix.com.
“The Smiths will NEVER get back together,” read the email. The site points out that the uppercase NEVER is how the publicist wrote the email.
