MGMT Pack Fall/Winter with European & U.S. Tours
MGMT have just announced a string of North American and European tour dates in support of their latest self-titled album, released earlier this week.
North American proceedings are scheduled to kick off on November 10th at Austin’s Fun Fun Fun Fest, before the band set off for dates in Indianapolis, Chicago, Detroit, Memphis, Atlanta, Boston, a couple of Canadian shows, among others, before wrapping shenanigans up in Brooklyn (of course) on December 13th. Prior to that, the band will be performing across Europe, kicking off their mini-trek in Cologne, Germany on September 26th, and finishing up in Dublin, Ireland on October 19th.
For a taste of what to expect, their latest album is out now, and the band have just released the video for “Cool Song No. 2”, which you can partake of below. Directed by Isaiah Seret, shot by award-winning cinematographer, Bradford Young, with costume design by Mindy Le Brock, it stars Michael Kenneth Williams (AKA Omar from “The Wire” and Chalky White from “Boardwalk Empire”) as “The Plant Hunter” and Henry Hopper as his lover who, in a futuristic world in which genetically engineered plants are abused by drug users, is undergoing some grisly human-to-plant transformation. It’s three shades of strange, and bizarrely captivating stuff.
MGMT has received widespread acclaim, with Under The Radar calling it the band’s “most visionary and challenging album,” and Time suggesting that “As the band has matured so has their sound and the duo is moving past their Day-Glo party soundtrack tunes to create a more grown-up synth-heavy psychedelia”. Filter also said, of the album, that it “contains the same ingenuity fans have come to expect. The band still hold to no precedent but its own.”
The album is also notable for “The Optimizer”, an audio-visual experience included in all commercial formats of MGMT. I’m not sure what that means – but the little trailer for it can be watched here:
