melissa etheridge Biography

Melissa Etheridge, the American rock musician and singer-songwriter, was born on May 29, 1961 in Leavenworth, Kansas. She has been nominated for fifteen Grammy Awards and won two. Etheridge has sold nearly 14 million U.S. albums and 27 million worldwide.

Etheridge is best known for her smoky, raspy vocals, pop-based folk-rock and confessional lyrics. In January 1993, she came out as a lesbian and ever since has been a strong lesbian and gay activist.

Etheridge released her self-titled debut “Melissa Etheridge” in 1988 on Island Records. “Bring Me Some Water,” a hit single off the set received a Grammy nomination. She released “Brave and Crazy,” her second album, in 1989. Like her first set, “Brave and Crazy” peaked in the No. 22 spot on Billboard. In 1992 she released “Never Enough,” her third album, which peaked in the No. 22 spot on Billboard. Etheridge's mainstream breakthrough recording came in 1993 when she released “Yes I Am.” The set peaked at No. 15 on the Billboard 200 chart and spawned the hit singles “I'm the Only One” and “Come to My Window.” The album was certified 6x Platinum by the RIAA and is to date Etheridge's best selling album. Etheridge has released a total of ten studio albums. Her latest set “Fearless Love” was released in 2010.
