mana Biography
The Latin rock band Mana was formed in 1978 in Guadalajara, Mexico. Current band members include Juan Calleros (bass guitar), Sergio Vallin (electric guitar), Alex Gonzalez (backup vocals, drums) and Fher Olvera (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, acoustic guitar). Live band members include Juan Carlos Toribio (piano, keyboards, flute), Fernando “Psycho” Vallin (backup vocals, 2nd bass guitar and rhythm guitar) and Hector Quintana (backup vocals, percussion).
The group was originally called Sombrero Verde. They released their self-titled debut in 1981 and in 1983 released “A Tiempo de Rock.” Under the name Mana they have released 8 albums. Their latest set, “Drama y Luz,” was released in 2011.
Over the course of their three plus decade career the group has won numerous awards, including Grammy Awards (three), Latin Grammy Awards (five), MTV Latin America Video Music Awards (five), Premios Juventud Awards (four), Billboard Latin Music Awards (nine) and Premios Los Nuestro Awards (13). Their music draws on Latin pop, pop rock, ska, reggae and calypso. Initially they achieved international commercial success from Spain and Australia. Since then Mana has gained exposure and popularity in the U.S., Middle East, Asia and Western Europe. As of 2011, Mana has sold over 25 million worldwide albums.
