The American rock band Kings of Leon was formed in 1999 in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee. Band members include brothers Caleb Followill (rhythm guitar lead vocals) Nathan Followill (backing vocals, drums percussion), Jared Followilll (backing vocals, bass guitar) and cousin Matthew Followill (backing vocals, lead guitar). The early music of the band blended Southern rock with blues. However over the years their style has gradually expanded to include various genres with a sound that is more alternative arena rock.

Kings of Leon released their first record, Holy Roller Novocaine EP, in February 2003. Rolling Stone Magazine gave the set a 4/5 star rating. Youth and Young Manhood, their debut album was released in July 2003 in the UK and in August 2003 in the US. Their gritty garage rock sound drew comparisons to The Strokes and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Aha Shake Heartbreak, their second album, was released in October 2004 in the UK and in February 2005 in the US.

The initial success for Kings of Leon was achieved in the UK. In 2008 the band received two BRIT Awards and had nine singles in the Top 40. At the time the band's three albums all peaked on the UK Albums Chart within the top five spots. Because of the Times, their third album, rose to No. 1. In September 2008, after releasing Only by the Night, the band achieved success on the charts in the U.S. Their singles Notion, Use Somebody and Sex on Fire all peaked in the No. 1 spot on Billlboard's chart Hot Modern Rock Tracks. Only by the Night was Kings of Leon's first U.S. platinum selling album. It was also the top selling album in Australia in 2008. Come Around Sundown, their fifth album, was released in October 2010.
