kathy griffin Biography

Kathy Griffin, the American stand-up comedian, actress, television personality, model, LGBT rights advocate, and best selling author, was born in Oak Park, Illinois on November 4, 1960. Griffin first received recognition for her two appearances on Seinfeld episodes and supporting role on NBC's sitcom “Suddenly Susan.” She starred in “Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List,” a Bravo reality show, and as executive producer won two Emmys. Griffin has also been a red carpet commentator and voice artist. From 2009 to 2011 she received Grammy nominations three years in a row for the Best Comedy Album award. In March 2011, Griffin will be making her debut on Broadway in her show “Kathy Griffin Wants a Tony.”

Kathy Griffin started performing in Los Angeles during the early 1980s with The Groundlings, an improv comedy troupe. She then went on and started performing stand-up comedy, becoming part of Los Angeles' flourishing alternative comedy scene. She performed at the Un-Cabaret and did “Hot Cup of Talk,” her own show. That later became the title of her solo 1998 HBO special. After amassing many film and TV credits, Griffin received her first public exposure on a consistent basis when she appeared in “Suddenly Susan,” an NBC sitcom, in the role of Brooke Shields' acerbic colleague. In 1998, she starred in “Kathy Griffin: A Hot Cup of Talk,” a one hour special on HBO. In September 2009, her book “A Memoir According to Kathy Griffin” was published by Ballatine Books and debuted in the No. 1 spot on New York Times Bestseller List.
