john mellencamp Biography

John Mellencamp, the American rock songwriter-singer, musician, painter and actor who has previously gone by stage names John Cougar Mellencamp, John Cougar, and Johnny Cougar, was born on October 7, 1951 in Seymour, Indiana. He is best known for his brand of populist, catchy heart rock that favors organic instrumentation and shuns artificial sounds such as synthesizers. Mellencamp has sold more than 40 million worldwide albums and had 22 U.S. top 40 hits. He is also the record holder for most tracks from a solo artist reaching the No. 1 spot on the chart Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks with seven. He has received 13 Grammy Award nominations and won one. In August 2010, Mellencamp's most recent album, entitled No Better Than This, was released and received widespread acclaim from music critics.

Mellencamp is a founding member of Farm Aid. In 1985 the organization was started with a show in Champaign, Illinois for raising awareness about the decrease in family farms and for raising funds to help farm families keep their land. For the last 25 years, the Farm Aid shows have been an annual event. The organization in 2010 raised more than $39 million. On October 2 2010, Farm Aid's 25th anniversary concert took place in Milwaukee at Miller Park.

On March 10, 2008, Billy Joel inducted Mellencamp into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The biggest musical influences for John Mellencamp are the Rolling Stones, Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan.
