John Legend, the American musician, recording artist and actor, was born as John Stephens on December 28, 1978 in Springfield, Ohio. Legend has won nine Grammy Awards. In 2007 the Songwriters Hall of Fame honored him with their Starlight award.

Before Legend released his debut album, his career gained momentum from his successful colloborations with several established artists. Legend added his voice along with these established artists to help them top the charts with their songs. He appeared on “Selfish” from Kayne West's “Slum Village” and on “This Way” from West's ”Dilated Peoples.” Legend also appeared on the Jay-Z song “Encore” and provided backing vocals for Alicia Keys on her songs “You Don't Know My Name” and on “High Road” from the album “Fort Minor.” Legend also played piano on the Lauryn Hill song “Everything Is Everything.”

In December 2004, John Legend released “Get Lifted,” his debut album. The set debuted on Billboard's 200 chart in the No. 7 spot and during its first week out sold 116,000 copies. It has sold 2.1 million U.S. copies and three million worldwide copies. The RIAA has certified the album platinum. The set spawned two hit singles: “Used to Love U” and “Ordinary People.”

Legend's second album, “Once Again,” was released in October 2006. The set was produced by will.i.am, Raphael Saadiq and Kayne West. His third album, “Evolver” was released in October 2008. In September 2010 Legend released a collaborative album with The Roots entitled “Wake Up!”
