joan jett Biography
The American rock musician Joan Jett was born in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania on September 22, 1958. Her best known work has been with the group Joan Jett & the Blackhearts. Their popular hits include the 1982 No. 1 hit "I Love Rock n Roll" as well as "Crimson and Clover" and "Bad Reputation." Jett has had three albums certified Gold or Platinum and is known as Queen of Rock-n-Roll.
Jett started to play guitar when she was thirteen years old. Her family moved to Southern California and Jett was able to start interacting with Suzi Quatro and other idols. Quatro was the first first woman bass player that became a big rock star. She was a major influence on Jett's career.
In 1975 Jett helped to found the all woman band The Runaways along with Cherie Currie, Lita Ford, Jackie Fox and Sandy West. Jett played rhythm guitar, performed some of the lead vocals and helped write the band's material. The Runaways released five albums before disbanding in 1979.
In 1980 Jett released her self-titled debut album. Boardwalk Records re-issued the album as "Bad Reputation" in 1981. Jett formed the Blackhearts and the band released "I Love Rock 'n Roll," their debut album, in 1981. The title track peaked in the No. 1 spot on Billboard's Hot 100 track and remained in that position for seven weeks. The single is No. 56 on Billboard's all-time song list.
In 1983 Jett & the Blackhearts released "Album" and in 1984 "Glorious Results of a Misspent Youth." In 1986 the group released the album "Good Music," featuring appearances from Darlene Love, The Sugarhill Gang and the Beach Boys. "Up Your Alley" was released in 1988 and went multi-platinum. A cover song album, "The Hit List," was released in 1990. They released "Notorious" in 1994 and "Pure and Simple" in 1994. In 2006 Jett & the Blackhearts released their latest album "Sinner."
