Jill Scott, the American R&B and soul songwriter-singer, actress and poet was born in Philadelphia, PA on April 4, 1972. Scott's film debut was in 2007 when she appeared in the movies “Hounddog” (playing the role of Big Mama Thornton) as well as ”Why Did I Get Married?,” the feature film of Tyler Perry's. She also played the lead role in “The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency,” an HBO/BBC series.
Scott initially was a spoken word artist and performed in live poetry readings. Eventually Amir Thompson from The Roots discovered her. She co wrote “You Got Me.” The Roots and Erykah Badu won a Grammy Award for “You Got Me” as best rap performance by a duo or group. During one of the Roots' live shows Scott made her debut by singing the show as the original singer/artist. Scott also collaborated with Common, Will Smith and Eric Benet and toured Canada as part of the “Rent” production from the Broadway musical.
Scott released her debut album, “Who Is Jill Scott?” in 2000. Her song “A Long Walk” received some chart success and in 2003 was nominated for a Grammy Award as Best Female Vocal Performance. “Cross My Mind” won a Grammy Award in 2005 as Best Urban/Alternative R&B Performance. Scott has won a total of three Grammy Awards. She released “Experience: Jill Scott 826+,” a live album, in 2001 and “Beautifully Human,” her second studio album, in 2004. In 2005, “The Moments, The Minutes, the Hours,” a book of Scott's poetry, was published. In 2007 Scott released “The Real Thing,” her third studio album. In 2011, her latest album, “The Light of the Sun,” was released.
