jackson browne Biography
The American rock musician and singer-songwriter Jackson Browne was born in Heidelberg, Germany on October 9, 1948. He has sold more than 17 million U.S. albums over the course of his career. Browne came to prominence during the 1970s. His personal angst and political interests have highly influenced his career and resulted in popular songs like “Running On Empty,” “Lawyers in Love” “The Pretender,” “These Days” and “Somebody's Baby.” Browne became a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. That same year Occidental College in Los Angeles gave Brown an honorary Doctorate in Music to recognize his remarkable musical career which has successfully combined his highly personal artistry along with his broader vision of justice and social change.
Browne signed a contract with Asylum Records in 1971. In 1972, he released “Jackson Browne.” The set included his top ten hit single “Doctor My Eyes.” His followup 1973 set “For Everyman” wasn't as successful as his debut album, but still sold one million copies. Browne consolidated his following with his 1974 set “Late for the Sky.” The title song was featured in “Taxi Driver,” the Martin Scorsese film.
In 1976, Browne released “The Pretender,” following the suicide of Phyllis Major, his first wife. Nancy Farnsworth, Major's mother, co-wrote “Here Come Those Tears Again.” In 1977, Browne released “Running on Empty,” his most commercially successful album. The live album combined live performances, new material and recordings made back stage, in hotel rooms and on buses. Browne's 1980 set “Hold Out” was a commercial success and “Somebody's Baby” became his highest charting single, peaking in the No. 7 spot on Billboard's Hot 100 chart.
During the 1980s, his lyrics became increasingly political on albums such as “Lawyers in Love” (1983), “Lives in the Balance” (1986) and “World in Motion (1989). Throughout the 1980s he also frequently performed for leftist causes and benefit concerts. In the 1990s, Browne returned to a style that was more personal. Browne released his latest album, “Time the Conqueror,” in 2008.
