The hip hop artist J. Cole was born on January 28, 1985 in Frankfurt, Germany and grew up in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He was the first artist to sign with Roc Nation, Jay-Z's record label, in 2009. In September 2011 J. Cole released "Cole World: The Sideline Story," his debut album. It debuted in the No. 1 spot on Billboard's 200, Top Rap Albums and Top R&B Albums charts. Over 217,000 copies of the album were sold during the first week of its release. Cole was nominated for the Best Artist Grammy Award. Cole has released sixteen music videos, eleven singles, three mixtapes and one studio album.
J. Cole started to rap when he was 13 years old. His main inspirations were Tupac Shakur and Canibus. When he was 17 years old Cole started posting songs on the internet under the name Therapist. Cole attended St. John's University in New York City. He graduated magna cum laude with a major in communications and minor in business.
In 2007, after graduating from college Cole released "The Come Up," his first mixtape. In June 2009 he released "The Warm Up," his second mixtape. In 2010 J. Cole was named Male Artist of the Year by the Underground Music Awards. Cole released "Friday Night Lights," his third mixtape, in November 2010.
"Cole World: The Sideline Story," J. Cole's debut album, was released in 2011. The lead single was "Can't Get Enough" which featured Trey Songz. "Can't Get Enough" was the second single with Rihanna and Songz. Cole's album debuted in the No. 1 spot on Billboard's 200 albums chart. "Work Out" peaked in the No. 13 spot on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. It also made the top ten of Billboard's Hot Rap Songs and Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs.
