iron maiden Biography

The British heavy metal band Iron Maiden was formed in 1975 in Leyton, London by primary songwriter and bassist Steve Harris. The band has released thirty one albums in total, including fifteen studio albums, four EPs, seven live albums and five compilations.

Iron Maiden, which helped to pioneer New Wave of British Heavy Metal, first achieved success in the early 1980s. The band underwent several lineup changes while releasing a series of gold and platinum albums. Their US platinum selling albums include 1982's “The Number of the Beast,” 1983's “Piece of Mind,” 1984's “Powerslave,” “Live After Death,” their live album from 1985, 1986's “Somewhere in Time,” and 1988's “Seventh Son of a Seventh Son.” In 2006 Iron Maiden released “A Matter of Life and Death.” The set peaked in the number nine spot on Billboard's 200 chat and in the number four spot on the UK chart. It was also one of just a few rock albums that have been certified platinum for India. “The Final Frontier,” their newest album, was released in August 2010. The album peaked in the number one spot in a total of 30 countries.

Iron Maiden is considered to be one of the most successful ever heavy metal bands. The band has sold more than 85 million worldwide records, with very little television or radio support. In 2002, Iron Maiden received an Ivor Novello Award in recognition of their international achievement. In 2005, while touring the United States, the band was inducted into Sunset Boulevard's Hollywood RockWalk in Los Anglees, CA. The band through October 2009 has played more than 200 live shows over the course of their career.

Iron Maiden for the last 30 years has been accompanied by “Eddie,” their famous mascot, who has made an appearance on a majority of the band's single and album covers in addition to their live shows.
