il divo Biography

Il Divo is a multi-national opera quartet formed by renowned manager, producer, and ‘American Idol’ and ‘The X Factor’ judge Simon Cowell. The phrase ‘Il Divo’ is Italian, which literally translates to “divine male performer”, however, none of the members are Italian. The group is composed of two tenors, American David Miller and Swiss Urs Buhler, a lone baritone in Spanish Carlos Marin and French Sebastien Izambard, the only pop singer in the group who didn’t receive any form of classical vocal training.

Cowell got the inspiration for Il Divo from Andrea Bocelli’s song ‘Con Te Partiro’ (“With you I will leave”), which he frequently heard from the HBO series ‘The Sopranos’. He modeled the group after The Three Tenors, the seasoned multi-national tenor trio composed of Italian Luciano Pavarotti and Spanish tenors Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras.

The group’s self titled debut surfaced in 2004 and featured their breakout hit ‘Regressa A Mi’, a Spanish rendition of the Toni Braxton hit ‘Unbreak My Heart’. The album debuted at the top of the UK charts, which at the time, was their primary market base. The album charted at no.4 in the Billboard 200 upon its release, but it was after their standing ovation performance on The Oprah Winfrey Show in April 2005 that the album dominated the Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com charts, resulting to a platinum certification for the album and American mainstream music recognition for the group.

To date, the quartet has released five studio albums, with their sixth set entitled ‘Wicked Game’ to be released in late November 2011. They have also released one live audio album, recorded from their show at the Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona, Spain on April 3, 2009. They have also graced the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on June 27, 2006, which was also recorded and later on released as a DVD album.
