green day Biography

The punk rock band Green Day was formed in 1987 in the Bay Area, California. Band members include guitarist and lead vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong, drummer Tre Cool and backing vocalist and bassist Mike Dirnt. In 1990 Cool replaced John Kiffmeyer as the band's drummer before they recorded Kerplunk, their second album.

Originally Green Day participated in the punk scene in Berkeley, California at the music club 924 Gilman Street. The early releases of the band were with Lookout! Records, an independent record label, where they grew a grassroots fan base. They released Dookie in 1994 as their major label debut. The set was Green Day's breakout success. It went on to sell more than 10 million U.S. copies. Green Day, along with other California punk bands such as NOFX, Rancid and The Offspring, are credited with reviving and popularizing punk rock music.

The next three albums from Green Day were not as successful as Dookie, although they did reach gold and double platinum status. The band released American Idiot in 2004. The rock opera reignited the popularity of the band with the younger generation. In the U.S. the set sold 5 million copies. In 2009, Green Day released 21st Century Breakdown, their eighth studio album.

Green Day over the course of their career has sold more than 65 million worldwide records and over 24 million in the U.S. The band has won four Grammys. American Idiot was adapted for the stage and debuted on Broadway in 2010. The musical has received positive reviews and been nominated for multiple Tony Awards.
