goo goo dolls Biography

The American alternative rock group The Goo Goo Dolls was formed in Buffalo, New York in 1986 by John Rzeznik (guitarist, vocalist) and Robby Takac (bass guitarist and vocalist). Mike Malinin is the band's drummer. He replaced George Tutuska in 1994. Some of the band's most popular songs are “Name” off of their 1996 album “A Boy Named Goo,” “Slide” and “Iris” off of their 1998 set “Dizzy Up the Girl,” and “Big Machine” and “Here Is Gone” off the 2002 album “Gutterflower.” The band has sold almost 9 million U.S. albums and have produced 14 top ten singles.

In 1987, The Goo Goo Dolls released their self-titled debut album. They then moved to Los Angeles and released “Jed,” their second set, in 1989. “Hold Me Up,” their third album, was released in 1990 and incorporated elements from punk rock, pop rock and heavy metal. The band's 1993 release “Superstar Car Wash” received widespread media attention.

Their breakthrough success came with the release of “A Boy Named Goo,” their fifth album, and hit single “Name” in 1995. It became one of the mid-1990's most successful alt-rock albums. The band's sound fundamentally changed to a more commercial and polished direction. The band was launched into superstar status with the release of the song “Iris” written for the soundtrack for the film “City of Angels.” The song also appeared on their triple-platinum 1998 album “Dizzy Up the Girl.” “Gutterflower” was released in 2002 and spawned the hit singles “Big Machine,” “Sympathy” and “Here Is Gone.” In 2006 the band released “Let Love In,” which included the hit singles “Give a Little Bit,” “Better Days,” “Stay with You” and “Let Love In.” “Something for the Rest of Us,” the latest Goo Goo Dolls album, was released in August 2010.
