The television series “Glee” is a musical drama-comedy that airs in the United States on Fox. It focuses on New Directions, McKinley High School's glee club. The glee club competes at show choir competitions as its members are dealing with social issues, their sexuality and relationships.
Initially, the main cast was comprised of Spanish teacher and club director Will Schuester (played by Matthew Morrison), Sue Sylvester (played by Jane Lynch), the cheerleading coach, Emma Pillsbury (played by Jayma Mays), the guidance counselor, Terri (played by Jessalyn Gilsig), Will's wife, along with eight club members who were played by the actors Jenna Ushkowitz, Mark Salling, Amber Riley, Cory Monteith, Lea Michele, Kevin McHale, Chris Colfer and Dianna Agron. For Glee's second season Naya Rivera, Heather Morris and Mike O'Malley, who had been recurring cast members, were promoted into the show's main cast.
Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan and Brad Falchuk created the series. Originally “Glee” was conceived as a movie. The three men write all the episodes for the show and the main directors are Falchuk and Murphy. The pilot episode of “Glee” aired May 19, 2009. The first season ran September 9, 2009 through June 8, 2010. Glee's second season started September 21, 2010. A third season of “Glee” has already been commissioned by Fox.
“Glee” features performance-based on-screen musical numbers which are chosen by Murphy. He aims for a balance between chart hits and show tunes. During the week of a “Glee” broadcast, the iTunes Store releases songs that are performed on the show. Columbia Records has also released several “Glee” albums. “Glee” music has been very commercially successful. Over five million albums and thirteen million single digital sales have been sold. Other “Glee” merchandise includes a Wii karaoke game, iPad application, a book series for young adults, and Blue-Ray and DVD releases.
During the first “Glee” season, the show received mainly favorable critical reviews. Glee's first season received nineteen Emmys Award nominations, six Satellite Awards nominations, four Golden Globe Award nominations along with fifty seven other nominations. “Glee” won the Best Television Series-Musical or Comedy Golden Globe Award along with Emmy Awards for the pilot episode directing of Murphy, Neil Patrick Harris as guest star and Jane Lynch. The show in 2011 won the Best Television Series-Musical or Comedy Golden Global Award again. Chris Colfer won the Golden Globe Award as Best Supporting Actor and Jane Lynch as Best Supporting Actress. Lea Michele was nominated as Best Actress and Matthew Morrison as Best Actor.
