The American country singer Garth Brooks was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on February 7, 1962. Brooks successfully integrated elements of rock into his music, which brought him enormous success. His progressive approached enabled Brooked to dominate country music's album and singles charts in addition to crossing over into pop music as well.

Throughout the 1990s Brooks had one of popular music's most successful careers. He broke records for concert attendance and sales. As of October 2011 Brooks had sold over 68 million albums. Six of Brooks' albums have been certified diamond. Brooks has released a total of 19 albums since 1989. These include 2 box sets, 3 Christmas albums, 4 compilation albums, 1 live album and 9 studio albums in addition to 77 singles. Brooks has won numerous awards, including 17 AMAs and 2 Grammy Awards. Brooks as of 2010 has sold more than 190 million worldwide albums, videos and singles.

In 1989 Brooks released his self-titled first album. The set peaked in the No. 2 spot on Billboard's country album chart and No. 13 on Billboard's 200 album chart. It was commercially and critically very successful and spawned several top 10 hits, including the No. 1 singles "If Tomorrow Never Comes" and "The Dance." In 1990 Brooks released "No Fences," his second album. It was No. 1 on Billboard's country music chart for 23 weeks. The albums spawned several classic No. 1 hit singles, including "Unanswered Prayers," "The Thunder Rolls" and "Friends in Low Places." In 1991 Brooks released "Ropin' the Wind," his third album, and in 1992 "The Chase," his fourth album. Brooks' 1993 album "In Pieces" also reached No. 1 and sold 10 million worldwide copies. In 1995 "Fresh Horses," Brooks' sixth album, was released. The album spawned the No. 1 hit "She's Every Woman" in addition to three other top 10 hits. "Sevens," the seventh Garth Brooks studio album, was released in 1997. It debuted in the No. 1 spt on Billboard's 200 and Top Country Albums charts. His duet with Trisha Yearwood (who would later become his wife) "In Another's Eyes" peaked in the No. 2 spot. In 2001 Brooks released "Scarecrow" after announcing his retirement.

From 2001 to 2009 Brooks was officially retired from performing and recording. He did release new singles sporadically during this time and has released a couple of compilation albums. In October 2009 Brooks announced he was ending his retirement. He started a five year deal in December 2009 with Encore Hotel and Casino located in Las Vegas.
