foster the people Biography

The indie pop band Foster the People was formed in 2009 in Los Angeles, California. Current band members include Mark Foster (vocalist, percussion, programming, guitar, synthesizers, piano, keyboards), Mark Pontius (extra percussion, drums) and Cubbie Fink (backing vocals, bass) who established the band. Mark Pontius formerly shot and edited music videos and played drums for Malbec, an indie pop band.

The band was originally named by Mark Foster as Foster & the People. However it was misheard by people to be Foster the People. He eventually became taken with the nurturing image evoking “taking care of” people and the name stuck.

Foster the People's rise to fame has been credited by NPR to them playing The Hype Machine as well as their South by Southwest performances.

Foster the People is best known for “Pumped Up Kicks.” The hit single reached the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart and on Billboard's Hot 100 and Rock Songs charts reached No. 3. The band released the album “Torches” in May 2011.

Brandon Dorsky filed a lawsuit in May 2011 against the band with a breach of contract as well as other claims. In July 2011, they settled the case for an amount that was undisclosed.
