flaming lips Biography
The American rock band The Flaming Lips was formed in 1983 in Norman, Oklahoma. Current band members include Wayne Coyne (lead vocalist, bass guitar, guitar, theremin, keyboards), Michael Ivins (backing vocalist, keyboards, bass), Steven Drozd (backing vocalist, lead vocals, bass, keyboards, guitar, drums), Derek Brown (percussion, keyboards, guitar) and Kliph Scurlock (percussion, drums).
Their sound melodically contains multi-layered, lush psychedelic rock arrangements. However their compositions lyrically show space rock elements, including unusual album and song titles like “Yeah, I Know It's a Drag... But Wastin' Pigs Is Still Radical” and “Psychiatric Exploration of the Fetus with Needles.” The band is well known for putting on elaborate live shows, featuring complex stage lighting, video projections, puppets, balloons, costumes, confetti, giant hands and the signature human-sized plastic bubble that frontman Wayne Coyne travels the audience in.
During the 1980s through early 1990s, the band record several EPs and albums with Restless, an indie record label, before signing with Warner Brothers. In 1993, they released their only US hit single “She Don't Use Jelly.” The Flaming Lips have been able to maintain critical respect as well as some commercial viability via their albums like “The Soft Bulletin” (1999) and “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots” (2002). The band has had addition hit singles in Europe and the UK. In 2007, they received a BRIT Award nomination as Best International Act. The band has also won three Grammy Awards, with two coming in the category Best Rock Instrumental Performance. The Flaming Lips released “Embryonic,” their latest album, in 2009.
