First Batch of South by Southwest 2013 Artists Confirmed

There’s just over four months between now and the beginning of the 2013 South by Southwest Music Festival, but we already have the first wave of artists that will be playing the event.

Among the more notable artists in the first wave of announcements are former Sonic Youth frontman Thurston Moore, legendary pop band the Zombies, Klaxons, Atlas Genius, Brendan Benson, Turbo Fruits and Alt-J.

As a press release points out, the initial list of bands “only scratches the surface of what will inevitably become our greatest and most diverse line up to date. Stay tuned as we will be making more announcements in the coming months.”

Next year’s event will be the 27th edition of SXSW, and will take place March 12-17, 2013 in Austin, Texas.

Applications are still open for performers that want to play the festival and can be submitted through the end of today (November 9) – the application fee is $40. The festival is expected to attract around 19,000 music industry professionals and 3,000 media representatives next year.

In other SXSW news, the popular interactive conference held in March every year to spotlight startup companies will be expanding to Las Vegas next year.

SXSW V2V will be the newest SXSW event, and will take place August 11-14, 2013 at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. The Austin Business Journal notes that organizers chose Las Vegas because of its proximity to the Bay Area, home to many startup companies. The magazine also points out that the event will not interfere with or take away from the SXSW music, film and interactive festival and conference in Austin.

The conference, which will be smaller than its Austin counterpart, will feature “informative panels and workshops, inspirational speakers, intensive mentor and coaching programs, networking events and receptions, pitch competitions and startup showcases.”
