The American rock band Evanescence was formed in 1995 in Little Rock, Arkansas by guitarist Ben Moody and pianist/singer Amy Lee. In 2003 the band released "Fallen," their debut album, with Wind-up Records. The album has sold over 17 million worldwide copies. Evanescence has been nominated for seven and won two Grammy Awards. In 2004 the band released "Anywhere But Home," a live album. It has sold over one million worldwide copies. In 2006 Evanescence released "The Open Door," the band's second album. The set has sold over five million copies.
There have been several lineup changes for Evanescence. In 2002 David Hodges (backing vocals, drums, piano, keyboards) left the group. In 2003 Ben Moody, one of the co-founders of the band, left in mid-tour. They were followed in 2006 by bassist Will Boyd and in 2007 by Rocky Gray (percussion, drums) and John LeCompt ( backing vocals, rhythm guitar). Current members of Evanescence are Amy Lee (lead vocalist,keyboards, piano), lead guitarist Terry Balsamo, bassist Tim McCord, drummer Will Hunt and rhythm guitarist Troy McLawhorn.
In October 2011 the band released "Evanescence," their third album. It debuted in the No. 1 spot on Billboard's 200 chart, selling 127,000 copies during its first week of release. The album spawned the singles "What You Want" and "My Heart Is Broken." Currently the band is touring in support of the album along with the groups Fair to Midland and The Pretty Reckless.
The musical style of Evanesence has been described as a metal band, rock band, gothic metal act and gothic rock. The band has been compared to numerous bands in different genres, including nu metal groups like Linkin Park and P.O.D., gothic metal bands such as Lacuna Coil as well as symphonic metal groups like Within Temptation and Nightwish. Other genres that have influenced Evanescence's music include chamber pop, post-grunge, electronica, hard rock, alternative rock, progressive metal, alternative metal and industrial.
