Erykah Badu, the American recording artist, actress and producer, was born in Dallas, Texas on February 26, 1971. Her music includes elements of jazz, hip hop and R&B. She is renowned for her her influence on neo soul, her cerebral and eccentric music stylings and her fashion. Badu is often called “Queen of Neo-Soul” or “First Lady of Neo-Soul.”

Badu was recognized in the early part of her career for her colorful and large head wraps. In terms of her musical sensibilities Badu is often compared to Billie Holiday, the great jazz singer. She was formerly a Soulquarians member. Badu has also worked as actress and has appeared in films such as “Before the Music Dies, “The Cider House Rules” and “Blues Brothers 2000.”

Badu released her acclaimed debut album “Baduizm” in 1997. The set debuted in the No. 2 spot on Billboard. “On & On,” the lead single, reached No. 12. Badu's introspective lyrics, and bass-heavy, jazzy sound received widespread notice. She was dubbed one of neo soul's leading lights. Her style of singing was compared to Billie Holiday. “On & On” and “Baduizm” both won Grammy Awards and the album went triple platinum eventually. She released her second studio album, “Mama's Gun,” in 2000 and in 2003 her third set, “Worldwide Underground.” In 2008, “New Amerykah Part One” was released and in 2010 “New Amerykah Part Two.”
