The band has sold over 100 million albums.
When the band first emerged Duran Duran was originally considered to belong to the New Romantic scene in addition to Spandau Ballet and other bands. However, the then shed that image. They built an elegant and sharp image by working with fashion designers and were dubbed rock music's “prettiest boys.”
Duran Duran become known for their controversial videos that were sexually suggestive and contained partial nudity during the early 1980s and helped popularize MTV, the music video channel. The band was established by Stephen Duffy, John Taylor and Nick Rhodes. Later Roger Taylor was added and after many personnel changes Simon Le Bon and Andy Taylor. The band has never broke up, however the lineup has undergone numerous changes. From 1986-2001, Warren Cuccurullo was a guitarist and from 1989-1991 Sterling Campbell was the drummer. During the early 2000s the five original band members reunited, which caused a storm among the music media and band fans. In 2006, Andy Taylor left and Dom Brown, a guitarist from London, has worked with the band since that time as a touring member and session player.
