def leppard Biography
The English rock band Def Leppard was formed in Sheffield, England in 1997 and helped usher in British Heavy Metal's New Wave. The band members since 1992 have included vocalist Joe Elliott, guitarist Phil Collen, guitarist Vivian Campbell, bass guitarist Rick Savage and drummer Rick Allen. The eighteen year lineup is the longest standing one for Def Leppard.
The strongest commercial success for Def Leppard occurred from the early '80s into the early '90s. Robert John Lange produced “High 'n' Dry,” their 1981 album. Lange helped the band define their style. In 1982, the stand out track on the album, “Bringin' On the Heartbreak” was one of the very first videos of metal music to play on MTV. “Pyromania,” the next album from band, was released in 1983. “Photograph,” the lead single, helped Def Leppard become a household name.
In 1987, Def Leppard released “Hysteria,” their fourth album. It topped both the U.K. And U.S. album charts. The album has sold over 20 million worldwide copies and spawned seven hit songs, including “Rocket,” “Animal,” “Armageddon It,” “Hysteria,” “Pour Some Sugar on Me” and “Love Bites.”
In 1992, “Adrenalize,” their next album, made it to the No. 1 spot on Billboard's U.S. chat as well as the UK Album chart. The set contained several hit singles, including “Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad” and “Let's Get Rocked.” “Retro Active” was released in 1993 and contained their acoustic hit single “Two Steps Behind.” “Vault,” the band's greatest hits album, was released in 1995.
Def Leppard has sold over 65 million worldwide albums and is one of the best-selling bands in the world. “Hysteria” and “Pyromania” have both been certified diamond by the RIAA. Def Leppard continues to perform and is planning to tour in 2011.
