dave koz Biography

Dave Koz is a saxophonist who first gained popularity and acclaim after signing on as Bobby Caldwell’s resident saxophonist during the 1980s. His work with Caldwell led to more session works and live collaborations with the likes of Jeff Lorber and Richard Marx. Come the’90s, Koz ventured out as a smooth jazz solo artist after singing with Capitol Records and released within the same year his self-titled debut album. It took him almost a decade to score his first top 10 record with 1999’s ‘The Dance’, which charted at no.3 at the Billboard Top Jazz Albums list.

During the ‘90s, Koz hosted an array of programs, both on TV and on radio, which centered on jazz music, among those were the syndicated ‘Dave Koz Radio Show’; ‘The Dave Koz Morning Show’, a radio show with Pat Prescott which aired over at 94.7 The Wave; and the 30-minute Fast Focus show ‘Frequency’, where he got to talk with fellow artists of various music genres and perform with them at the end of the show.

In 2002, Koz, Frank Cody and Hyman Katz established the label Rendezvous Entertainment. 2004 was quite an ironic year for Koz as he was named one of People magazine’s “50 Hottest Bachelors” after coming out of the closet earlier in the year through his interview with The Advocate.

At present, Koz is the face of the Dave Koz & Friends Jazz Cruises which has sailed for five years now and has featured other acclaimed jazz artists and even personalities from other fields such as the late NBA star Wayman Tisdale partaking in the event. Tisdale made a special appearance in 2006, three years prior to his death.

In 2010, Koz hit his first number one record with the release of ‘Hello Tomorrow’. As for his singles, he has four chart toppers in the Billboard Jazz Singles charts – 2008’s ‘Life in the Fast Lane’, 2010’s ‘Put the Top Down’, and ‘Starting Over Again’ and ‘Anything’s Possible’, which both came out in 2011.
