Coldplay Books 2012 North American Tour Dates

Capping off a successful year last week with three Grammy nominations, Coldplay has announced their first North American tour in nearly three years. The trek will consist of 21 dates beginning in Edmonton, Alberta on April 17. The tour will continue through August 11, ending in St. Paul, Minn. During the intervening dates, the band will hit most major markets in the United States, including Boston, Washington, Philadelphia and Atlanta, with the notable exception of New York. Included in the tour, the band also will play two shows at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles May 1 and 2. After the final Los Angeles date, there will be a nearly two month long break before the band resumes the tour again on June 22.

At the Grammy nomination ceremony, held November 30, it was announced that the band is nominated for the rock performance award and the rock song award for the single “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall.” The group’s song “Paradise” was also nominated for best pop duo/group performance. Both songs are off the band’s most recent alum, Mylo Xyloto, which was released on October 25 in the U.S. That album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 album chart, selling nearly 500,000 copies during its first week of release. In fact, the album landed in the number one spot for album charts in 17 countries around the globe.

Coldplay current is on tour in Europe, and will continue going around the continent through the end of the year, with no shows scheduled between the first of the year and the North American tour. Fans can, however, get a preview of the shows as the band is playing the first ever Austin City Limits New Year’s Eve special. During a rare 90-minute version of the show, the concert will be broadcast on PBS stations starting at 11 p.m. December 31.
