celtic woman Biography

The all-woman music group Celtic Woman was conceived and established by David Downes and Sharon Browne. Downes was formerly the musical director for “Riverdance,” an Irish stage show. Downes' idea was to draw on American's love of Celtic culture and music by bringing a group together than blended elements from Michael Flatley's Irish dance and music with an all-girl pop group structure like the Pussycat Dolls and Spice Girls. Successful artists like Clannad and Enya, in addition to the stage shows “Lord of the Dance” and “Riverdance” helped to build the popularity of Celtic music outside of Europe and Ireland.

In 2004, Downes recruited five Irish woman musicians, fiddler Mairead Nesbitt, and vocalists Meav Ni Mhaolchatha, Lisa Kelly, Orla Fallon and Chloe Agnew. The women had not performed together previously. It became the group's first lineup. Downes named the new group Celtic Woman. Their musical repertoire ranged from traditional Celtic to modern songs.

Over the years the lineup of the group has changed. In 2009, members of the group included Mairead Nesbitt, Alex Sharpe, Lisa Kelly, Lynn Hilary and Chloe Agnew. In May 2010, Alex Sharpe left. Celtic Woman has released five albums. The groups has also gone on several world tours. Celtic Woman has sold more than 6 million worldwide records.
