Pixies Take ‘Doolittle’ to Virgin Tour Cities

If you haven’t been able to drive several hundred miles in order to see the Pixies, this could be a lucky day for you.

The worldwide tour of the reunited alt-rockers has been extended. The outing is a celebration of the 20th anniversary of “Doolittle,” their classic second album from 1989, which actually makes the set 22. The trek will now include cities that the Pixies have never performed in.

The tour has been named “Lost Cities” and is the fourth “Doolittle” tour leg. Gigs will be performed by the Pixies in cities that were previously missed such as Santa Fe, N.M., Knoxville, TN and Wilmington, DE.

The new set of dates will kick off in Montclaire, NJ on October 27 and will be following the previous format of the tour. The band will be playing “Doolittle” in its entirety along with a couple of b-sides. For encores, the band will be drawing from their entire music catalog. You could get lucky and hear classics from “Doolittle” like “Wave Of Mutilation” and “Here Comes Your Man” in addition to other favorites like “Where Is My Mind” off “Surfer Rosa,” their debut album.

Later this week, ticket information will be announced.

Black Francis Tacks on Acoustic Solo Dates onto Pixies Tour

Pixies main man Black Francis will spend the homestretch of the summer touring to back up his new release, “NonStopErotik”.

The tour is a continuation of Francis’  ongoing acoustic tour minus his acclaimed rock band, the Pixies.  Yet, fans can still expect a taste of Pixies sound as Francis will be tapping the services of Pixies’ on-again off-again keyboardist Eric Drew Feldman.

Francis will resume the road trail on Sunday, August 15, in Big Sur, CA followed by seven consecutive shows throughout the west coast until August 22 in Vancouver.  The artist will be finishing off the tour with an east coast swing from September 2 to 4, with the last two nights of the tour spent in NYC’s Joe’s Pub.

“NonStopErotik” is currently out on stores and features previous Black Francis hits throughout the artist’s 20-year run as a solo artist.

The Pixies on Tour for “Doolittle” Anniversary

David Lovering, Joey Santiago, Kim Deal and Black Francis, collectively known as The Pixies, will be going on tour that will be spread out in 11 cities, from east to west, across the US, to celebrate the 21st anniversary of their most successful album “Doolittle” which was released in 1989.

The trek dubbed as the “Doolittle Tour” will be launched in Upper Darby, PA on September 7 and will run through the 26th where the tour finale will be held in La Jolla, CA. Pop-electro British act Fuck Buttons will be tagging along as opening act for all the shows. Each show for the tour will feature a light spectacle brought by four light spheres which will be hanging on the stage. Also, twelve out of the 21 tracks from the band’s set list will be accompanied with video features displayed on massive projectors for the entire crowd to see.

The band is currently prepping for a string of shows overseas beginning on June 6 in Italy then crossing four other countries – Israel on the 9th, Australia on July 30, New Zealand on August 3 and finally, Japan on the 7th.

They will be recording each show from both the US and the international tours, and CD copies will be sold shortly after the entire tour comes to a close. Since 1991, the band has never released any new studio albums except for these live compilations. Their last studio release to date was 1991’s “Trompe le Monde”.

“Doolittle” was the band’s first record to make waves in the Billboard charts when it hit the 98th spot of Billboard’s Hot 200 Albums chart and sat comfortably on the list for close to 30 weeks.

To date, the band has released four albums and an EP entitled “Come on Pilgrim” in 1987. All these records along with a concert DVD featuring their performance at the Brixton Academy in London and a book 54 pages long are being sold as a memorabilia boxed set entitled “Minotaur”. Concert Review: Pixies Los Angeles

Veteran acts Echo & the Bunnymen and Devo in recent weeks have been revisiting late 70′s as well as early to mid-80′s classic albums with performances in Los Angeles.  The Pixies, during their stand of three nights at Hollywood Palladium, extended this to the latter part of the 1980s with their set based on “Doolittle,” the band’s major label debut from 1989 which paved the way for “Nevermind” by Nirvana.  The tour, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the album, earlier this fall hit Europe and is currently working through a nine city US itinerary with 22 shows.

The album showcasing shows are providing fans with an opportunity of seeing some of their old favorite bands performing albums from these acts creative peaks.  However there isn’t a lot of room for surprises or spontaneity.  If you know the running order of the album, you know which songs are coming up next.  So you need to give the Pixies some credit for flipping this concept around by playing the B-sides as well.  They opened their set on November 5 with four non-album tracks before moving into the main event.

Kim Deal, bassist and backing vocalist, happy chirped “B-sides” while the band was taking the stage.  They opened with “Dancing the Manta Ray,” which served as the big payoff’s foreplay of the four non-album tracks.  Probably only the most devoted of fans know these songs.  However they probably sounded vaguely familiar to practically everyone there.  They did feature the trademark elements of the Pixies- the madman vocals of Black Francis, often colliding with the sweet harmonies from bassist Kim Deal; the monster stop-start guitar riffing from France and Joey Santiago, lead guitarist; and the steadfast rhythm section from Deal and David Lovering.  After the third obscure tune “Bailey’s Walk” Deal teased the crowd asking them, have you guy ever heard these B-sides, possibly due to the somewhat tepid reception from the crowd.

The Pixies, five songs into their set, finally tore into the familiar “Debaser.” The Palladium suddenly exploded with a sea of fists that pumped in unison with the drumbeats from Lovering.  “Doolittle” just barely made the Billboard top 100 album chart when it was first released.  However it did have several favorites on alternative radio, including two modern rock top 10 tracks in “Monkey Gone to Heaven” and “Here Comes Your Man.”  “As performed on Thursday “Here Comes Your Man” was revealed to be pure pop genius.  The fact that it never crossed into the top 40 is a crime, however timing is everything.  “Doolittle” came before Nirvana was able to kick the underground doors open to mainstream.  Inside the Palladium, however, the Pixies received a returning conquering hero reception  The throbbing, sinister “Monkey” keep the crowd holding their digits up to match the frantic numeral  intonations from Francis associated with God, the devil and man.  “Wave of Mutilation, the surf space age anthem, which was been given new life recently through Rock Band, also was well received.

The Pixies sounded as tight and sharp as ever.  However, even in their prime they were never stunning visually.  Age has taken a toll.  All three of the male members have either shaved heads or are balding.  The hulking, shaved head Black Francis wouldn’t need to work very hard to become the “Addams Family’s” Uncle Fester for Halloween.  The once sexy and sleek Deal looks now like a Goth girl turned into a soccer mom.  The Pixies, perhaps to help compensate for some of their lack in visual appeal, did use several visual aids to project images onto a video screen.  They included a screening of “Un chien andalou,” the surrealist silent film from 1929 by Salvador Dali and Luis Bunuel, as the band was taking to the stage.

However, as the show continued, the band was able to pull out some moves that were show stopping.  The lead vocal turn from Deal on the tune “Into the White” saw the stage enveloped completely in smoke.  During the encore later on, Santiago held his guitar up like a rifle.  He pretended to pick off members in the audience.  Lovering them tossed a drumstick to him.  He used it to play a few wicked slide riffs.  However probably the night’s most compelling moment was when the Pixies performed  a “Wave of Mutilation” rendition in the slow-down, beautiful B side version, which is known also as “UK Surf” parenthetically.  Perhaps the  next move from the Pixies should be to tour performing their better known material unplugged or lounge-style.  That could serve the band’s aging fan base quite well.  However would the kids understand?

The Pixies Prepare for ‘Doolittle’ Tour

The Pixies have added a few dates to their upcoming tour which marks the 20th anniversary of “Doolittle,” their classic album. They have also revealed the outing’s opening acts.

On the upcoming trip the band extended each city’s residency by one night or more. Three night stands are scheduled for Los Angeles (11/4-11/6), Chicago (11/19-11/21), and Oakland, CA (11/8-11/10), along with a fourth night at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City (11/23-11/26). The tour will kick off in Los Angeles on November 4 and run through December 1 in Washington DC.

The group has also announced the trek’s opening acts. They include the Bad Lieutenant, the new project from the former frontman for New Order, No Age, the indie-rockers form Los Angeles, and Jay Reatard, punk songwriter/singer.

The Pixies (David Lovering, Joey Santiago, Kim Deal and Black Francis) during their upcoming tour will be playing the entire “Doolittle” (1989) , include all the B-sides on the album.

Black Francis, singer/guitarist said in a statement to the press, we wanted to be able do something very special for Doolittle’s 20th anniversary release. We thought playing all the album’s songs would be a good opportunity. It is something we normally don’t do during regular gigs.

“Trompe Le Monde,” the band’s most recent studio album, was released in 1991. This fall the Pixies plan to issue a boxed set coinciding with the gigs for “Doolittle.” The collection is entitled “Minotaur,” and will house all of The Pixie’s albums, including new artwork and bonus tracks. The MySpace Pixies page has extensive information regarding the set.

The Pixies band formed in 1986 in Boston. Before they disbanded in 1992 they released a total of five studio albums. The alt-rockers in recent years have occasionally reunited for one-off sporadic performances. Most recently the banded completed a European tour, including appearances in the UK, Ireland, Germany and France.

Pixies Plan to Resurrect 'Doolittle' on New Concert Tour

The Pixies, a month after announcing their plans to celebrate “Doolittle’s” 20th anniversary, their classic album from 1989, with a tour of Euorpe have announced plans to also have a US run.

The newly announced US outing will kick off in Los Angeles on November 4.  It will visit nine cities across the US through the end of the month and include multiple night stands in New York City, Chicago, Seattle and Oakland, CA.  Tickets will be hitting the box office in August as well as September on various dates.

The Pixies, comprised of David Lovering, Kim Deal, Joey Santiago and Black Francis, on their tour will be playing the entire “Doolittle” album, including the album’s associated B-sides.

For the 20th anniversary “Doolittle” release we wanted to be able to do something that was special, Black Francis said.  We thought this was a great opportunity to be able to perform all of the album’s songs since we don’t usually do that during regular gigs.

“Trompe Le Monde” was the last studio album released by the Pixies in 1991.  This fall the band plans to release a complete boxed set which will coincide with their “Doolittle” shows.  The boxed set is called “Minotaur.”  It includes all the band’s albums as well as new art work and bonus tracks.  Information on the set can be found on the MySpace page of The Pixies.

In 1986 The Pixies were founded in Boston.  Before the group broke up in 1992, they recorded five studio albums.  The alt-rockers in recent years have occasionally reunited for one off performances on a sporadic basis.  Most recently The Pixies performed in Stockholm, Sweden at Where the Action Is Festival on June 12 and in the UK at Wight Festival on June 14.
