Perhaps the most notable part of this year’s Coachella Music and Arts Festival was the appearance of the late rapper Tupac Shakur in hologram form during a Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg performance at the festival. The appearance almost immediately sparked talk of an upcoming tour featuring the hologram.
Yesterday, Dr. Dre posted a video to YouTube that addressed the rumors of the tour. Though he said that the hologram was created just for Coachella, he did not rule out the possibility of an eventual tour.
“It was strictly for Coachella, get it right,” Dr. Dre, otherwise known as Andre Young, said in a video from a backstage area at Coachella before his second performance of the festival last night. “I want to get rid of all the rumors out there. This was not done for a tour.”
And while that sounds like the end of tour talks, Dre went on to leave the statement somewhat open ended.
“If a tour happens, we’ll see,” he said, and then added, “this was done strictly for Coachella 2012, baby, just for you.”
He also gave a shout out to AV Concepts and Digital Domain, which created the hologram. The rapper thanked them for making his “dream come to life.” Dre ended the video by addressing his upcoming performance. “Now I gotta get my ass on stage and rock this motherf—cker.”
The first rumors on the tour were reported by the Wall Street Journal shortly after the first performance of the hologram. The newspaper reported that there were two options being discussed for the tour. One would be a large stadium tour involving Eminem, 50 Cent and Wiz Khalifa, along with Dre and Snoop Dogg. A second, more intimate option, would just feature the latter two rappers and a more limited tour visiting smaller venues.
Snoop Dogg has announced that he will team up with rapper Wiz Khalifa for a short tour to support the soundtrack the two collaborated on for their upcoming movie, Mac and Devin Go To High School, which is due out early next year. The tour has been dubbed the High School tour.
The six-date tour will kick off December 5 at Terminal 5 in New York and will conclude just over a week later at the Wiltern in Los Angeles. In between, they will play Philadelphia, Washington DC, Atlanta and San Francisco.
The ‘Mac and Devin Go To High School’ soundtrack will be released December 13, the day of the last show of the tour, and already has been preceded by the single “Young, Wild & Free,” which features vocals from Bruno Mars. That track was released in October and cracked the top 10 of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.
Though no release date has been set, the film is expected to be released early next year. It was directed by Dylan Brown and is set in a Los Angeles High School. Khalifa plays a “nerd” that aspires to be valedictorian who gets advice from the ladies man played by Snoop. Speaking to Billboard magazine earlier this year, Khalifa said, “It’s a great buddy film… Snoop’s the cool guy in school and I’m kind of the nerd.”
Though he released his debut album, Show and Prove, in 2006, the 24-year-old Khalifa made his biggest splash with his Atlantic debut, Rolling Papers. Released on March 29, the album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 album chart and features guests Too $hort and Curren$y. “Black and Yellow,” the third single from the album has been the most successful single released so far, peaking at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Snoop released his most recent album, Doggumentary on the same day Rolling Papers was released.
Charlie Sheen and Snoop Dogg are working together to record a song that will be produces by Rob Patterson, ex-guitar player for Korn. While nothing has been formally announced, Billboard is saying that their work together has produced a single.
On Twitter, Sheen uploaded a photo of Patterson, who is currently with the group Filter, Snoop Dogg, and himself working together in a recording session.
Sheen sent out a tweet that said, “Warlock meets his makers-music makers that is @SnoopDogg @robpatterson666 get ready to rock the Sheenius within! http://twitpic.com/4d9cw1.
This song is believed to be a part of Sheen’s upcoming live performances which he is calling My Violent Torpedo of Truth. His first show is scheduled for April 2 in Detroit.
Even though Sheen has received a poor review from Wu Tang Clan’s Raekwon who referred to him as a “rich dick,” he has been rumored to have hung out with P Diddy in Los Angeles at Diddy’s house.
Snoop Dogg is set to release his newest venture, The Doggumentary in the United Kingdom on April 18. He is scheduled to perform live at the Manchester International Festival on July 15. The artist, who has worked with many other musicians such as Willie Nelson, will be performing the full Doggystyle album from 1993.
“Doggumentary Music”, Snoop Dogg’s 11th studio set, is slated to hit shelves in March, but not without a good set of tour dates to accompany the album’s release.
His tour slate kicks off on the 18th with a show at The Fillmore in San Francisco. The west coast native and hip-hop giant is also slated to stop by several other clubs and party venues for the next two weeks thereafter with shows scattered through the Midwest and the east and with one more stop in the west in Stateline, NV on the 19th. The tour will close with a show in Wichita, KS on February 3.
Snoop has also unveiled a four city hop-and-skip slate in Australia in April. Cities included in the itinerary are Sydney (9th), Joondalup (10th), Brisbane (16th), and Melbourne (17th).
At present, the lead single from his new album, “Wet”, has already been making rounds in the airwaves, both radio and video music channels, since its iTunes release during the holiday season. The album, which is the rapper’s follow-up to 2010’s “More Malice” (which then followed up 2009’s “Malice in Wonderland”), is produced by the Cataracs, who also worked with the Far East Movement for the late 2010 club hit track, “Like a G6”.
Meanwhile, Snoop Dogg has claimed that he received an invite from the English royal family to perform for Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding this spring, even mentioning his new single as “the perfect anthem for Prince William or any playa to get the club smokin’”.
As of press time, Snoop’s comments still has to be confirmed by the royal family as the entire guest list for the forthcoming wedding has not been unveiled.
In October, Snoop Dogg hits the road to stir up some interest for “Malice in Wonderland,” his upcoming studio album which is set to be released in December of this year. The tour will kick off in Baltimore, MD on October 27. So far there are 11 cities on the trek, including New York on October 29, Boston on November 1, and Chicago on November 4. The tour is scheduled to end in Dallas, TX on November 8.
The rap artist was earlier this week named as the Creative Chairman for Priority Records, the revived label for EMI, the parent company.
Snoop stated in a press release that is was a great feeling to start fresh with EMI. It is a new Priority Records, a new partnership, a new Snoop Dogg. The Boss Dogg, the Dogg Father, the Creative Chairman. We have developed a business model to bring all of the musical heritage of NWA and other groups to the forefront.
Priority, in addition to naming Snoop as Creative Chairman, will also release “Malice in Wonderland,” Snoop’s 10th studio album, on December 8. The album has production from Pete Rock, The Neptunes, Dr. Dre and others, with guest appearances from Pharrell, Mary J. Blige, Ghostface Killah, R. Kelly and others.
The album “Malice in Wonderland” is a follow up to 2008′s “Ego Trippin’,” which made its debut as No. 3 on Billboard’s 200 and sold 137,00 copes during the first week of the album’s release.
