Townshend Says The Who ‘Quadrophenia’ Tour Coming in 2012

Townshend Says The Who ‘Quadrophenia’ Tour Coming in 2012

The current solo tour of Roger Daltrey‘s centering on “Tommy,” the classic rock opera by the Who, has him performing without Pete Townshend, his longtime collaborator. However next year the two will be reuniting to tour “Quadrophenia,” the iconic album from 1973.

The guitarist in a blog post recently explained why he and Roger weren’t performing together on Daltrey’s “Tommy” tour. However he added that there are big plans in place for the Who for next year.

Townshend wrote, the reason I’m not touring with Roger is because it’s Roger’s adventure entirely. It brings him great joy. For this “Tommy” tour I don’t really belong. Sincerely, I do wish him all the best. I am really looking forward to performing with Roger next year to do “Quadrophenia” once again.

Townshend, to coordinate with the concert schedule that is being proposed, is hard at work remastering “Quadrophenia” to be re-released in 2012.

Townshend continued, in my studio there are computer systems that help with the engineering work for the upcoming release of “Quadrophenia.” Younger mastering engineers and forensic engineers have helped with cleaning up high frequencies out of range for me. The computer systems also work on stage quite well. At the time of The Who’s Super Bowl performance they work perfect for me and also performing “Quadrophenia” in 2010 at Royal Albert Hall.

The Who toured the album originally in 1973. However the dates were cut short after backing tracks that were necessary to perform these complex compositions halted and jammed repeatedly. In 1996 the band had a very successful reunion tour where they performed the album in its entirety for the very first time. Last year they also performed the whole set at Royal Albert Hall in London.

Roger Daltrey Revives ‘Tommy’ on UK Concert Tour

Although the living legend Roger Daltrey is 67 years old, he still loves the stage. The Who singer will be heading to the UK this summer where he will dust off “Tommy” from the Who’s acclaimed catalog. It is rock music’s most popular opera about a pinball enthusiast who is blind.

Unfortunately it looks like guitarist Pete Townshend won’t be able to join Roger Daltrey because of his increasing hearing problems. After all, he played with the drummer Keith Moon. However, Simon Townshend, Pete’s brother, will be taking his big brother’s place.

Recently Pete Townshend told the Guardian, it was great to see that Roger and his band will be performing “Tommy” in 2011. It is great hearing how Roger and the new band are re-interpreting our old Who songs. Roger has my most loving and complete support. I’ll be there with my spirit.

The outing is scheduled to launch in Alchester on July 3 and run through July 24. So far 15 dates have been scheduled. There is no word yet on whether Daltrey is planning to bring his trek to the U.S., so you might want to book your airplane tickets.

On May 6, tickets will be going on sale via Ticketmaster.

Pink Floyd Lives as Gilmour, Waters Make Nice for Charity Gig

They might not get along but Pink Floyd front men Roger Waters and David Gilmour buried the hatchet temporarily when they performed alongside each other for a Palestinian benefit on July 10, Saturday organized by the Hope and Optimism for Palestinians in the Next Generation Foundation (HOPING Foundation) held in Oxfordshire, England.

The four-track set list consisted of the Phil Spector classic “To Know Him is to Love Him” which is one of Pink Floyd’s to-go songs during sound checks. They also performed “Wish You were Here”, “Comfortably Numb” and “Another Brick in the Wall (Part Two)”.

Backing up the two artists are Chester Kamen who played the guitar, Guy Pratt who played the bass, Harry Waters and Jonjo Grisdale on keybords and Andy Newmark on drums.

The charity event turned out to be successful as Waters and Gilmour were able to raise £350,000 or more than half a million dollars.

Who Founder Roger Daltrey Heading Out on Rare Tour

Roger Daltrey hasn’t toured as a solo artist since back in 1985, but that’s all about to come to an end. Daltrey, founding member of the Who, will be embarking on the “Use It or Lose It Tour,” kicking off the effort in Vancouver, BC on October 10. The tour will cover 28-cities over two months, wrapping up at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, FL on November 30. The tour will focus on the smaller, more intimate venues than the Who would traditionally play.

As far as material goes, Daltrey has said he’d be drawing from Who songs, his own solo recordings as well as a handful of covers thrown into the mix for good measure. On the Who’s website, Daltrey said that this tour will help to bridge the gap until the Who hit the road again.

Daltrey will be aptly backed by Simon Townshend (guitarist), Loren Gold (keyboards), Scott Devours (drums), Jon Button (bass) and Frank Simes (guitarist).
