Of Montreal Sets Spring Tour for ‘Paralytic Stalks’

Athens, Ga. based rock band Of Montreal will hit the road next year for a Spring jam-packed with concerts that often are more akin to a circus than a music show. The tour, supporting the upcoming release Paralytic Stalks, will begin in earnest on March 7 in Jacksonville Fla., and will conclude on April 7 in Atlanta Ga. During that month span, the band will pack in 29 shows. That’s right, the band only gets two nights off for the whole month.

Those two nights will come directly after the band plays in Austin for this year’s South By Southwest festival. That show will take place March 15 as part of a showcase for the band’s record label, Polyvinyl. Supporting the band throughout the tour will be a rotating group of bands including Deerhoof, Loney Dear, Cults, Hard Nips, Computer Kids and Kishi Bashi.

Before the tour kicks off, the band will play a hometown show at Athens’ 40 Watt Club on February 17. Lead singer Kevin Barnes also will spin a New Year’s Eve DJ set as DJ List Christee at the Go Bar, also in Athens.

Paralytic Stalks, the eleventh album by the band, will be released February 7, 2012. Though Barnes usually performs and records all the parts of Of Montreal songs himself at his home studio, the new album features hired studio musicians for the first time. Barnes still acts as sole songwriter and also co-produced and co-engineered the album.

Of Montreal formed in 1996, and is a member of the Elephant 6 collective that also includes the bands Neutral Milk Hotel, Apples in Stereo and The Olivia Tremor Control, among others. Barnes has remained the only constant member of the band throughout its history. Though the band’s first albums were widely considered twee-pop, more recent albums have seen more funk and glam influence.

Of Montreal, the Indie rockers, have lined several US headlining dates up for this month as well as next to hold fans over while the band continues tinkering on their new studio album.

The group from Athens, GA, featuring Kevin Barnes, their eccentric founder and front man, will kick off their outing of nine cities in Baltimore on January 25 and finish up their eastern trek in Nashville on February 6.

In recent months Of Montreal has been busy finishing the band’s tenth studio album. According to Barnes the tentative title is “False Priest.” A release date has not been named as of yet, but the album will follow up on the group’s most recent album “Skeletal Lamping” from 2008.

In a recent interview with Under the Radar Magazine Barnes said their new album was influenced by ’80s New Wave and ’70s funk. He added it was a weird evolution, kind of a freaky evolution that was happening and that I’m letting it just happen. It doesn’t depart totally from “Skeletal Lamping” or “Hissing Fauna” from 2007, but it definitely is different. There is a different quality for sure.

Polyvinyl, the current record label for Of Montreal in October reissued five earlier albums of the band, including “The Bedside Drama: A Petite Tragedy” (1988), “Coquelicot Asleep In The Poppies: A Variety of Whimscial Verse,” (2001), “Aldhils Arboretum (2002), “The Bird Who Continues to Eat the Rabbit’s Flower (1997 EP), and “The Early four Track Recordings” (2001 compilation).
