After a two-year absence from touring, Canadian alt-rockers Nickelback will hit the road hard this spring with a 39-date North American tour that will last just under three months.
The hectic tour-schedule will find the band playing arenas around the America and Canada, and will kick off at the I Wireless Center in Moline, IL on April 10. The tour will culminate with a concert at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. In between those dates, the band will hit virtually every major market, including Detroit, New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Orlando, Minneapolis, Chicago, Dallas and Denver. Providing support for all shows will be the reunited British grunge rockers Bush, Seether and My Darkest Days. In a video announcing the tour, the band promises this tour will contain the “biggest, baddest, most over-the-top show yet.”
Dubbed the “Here and Now Tour 2012,” the tour fittingly is in support of the band’s most recent album, Here and Now. The group’s seventh studio album, Here and Now was released November 21, and debuted at number one in Canada, though it was kept out of the top spot of the U.S. Billboard 200 albums chart by Michael Buble’s Christmas album. Though no further dates have been announced, it is reported that the band also will undertake a worldwide tour for the album.
In other recent Nickelback news, the band made headlines around the time of the release date for Here and Now when they it was announced that the group would play the halftime show at the Thanksgiving Day football game between the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions at Ford field in Detroit. An online petition was started that suggested the band not be allowed to play the show gained over 55,000 signatures. Nickelback played the event, however, without incident.
Just because Nickelback is one of the best-selling bands of the new millennium doesn’t mean the band’s appeal is universal. It would appear, for example, that football fans don’t share the love for the Canadian alt-rock band. At least football fans in Detroit.
Nickelback is scheduled to perform during halftime of this year’s Thanksgiving Day game between the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers, and now tens of thousands of football fans have signed an online petition voicing their displeasure over this decision.
The petition originated on Change.org Tuesday by Dennis Guttman, a graduate student at the University of Michigan who has tickets to the game and was disappointed by the selection of halftime entertainment. He told ESPN in an interview that “There’s so much good talent in the area, known for being Michigan people,” and mentioned Bob Seger and Kid Rock as examples.
What started with 10 signatures Tuesday night had gone viral by Thursday and had picked up over 26,000 supporters as of this writing Friday morning. Guttman went on to say in the ESPN interview that he was “shocked and happy” with the amount of support.
Conveniently, Nickelback will release its seventh studio album, Here and Now, three days before the game. The album follows two singles already released ahead of the album, “When We Stand Together” and “Bottoms Up,” both released in late September.
Nickelback was the second best-selling foreign act in the United States for the 2000s decade, coming in only behind the Beatles. Worldwide, the band has sold nearly 50 million albums.
The Detroit Lions play on Thanksgiving Day every year, though a recent slump resulted in both fans and the media to reconsider this tradition. This year, however, the team has a winning record of 6-2, which appears to be part of the reason for the anti-Nickelback stance. The following is the language of the actual petition:
This game is nationally televised, do we really want the rest of the US to associate Detroit with Nickelback? Detroit is home to so many great musicians and they chose Nickelback?!?!?! Does anyone even like Nickelback? Is this some sort of ploy to get people to leave their seats during halftime to spend money on alcoholic beverages and concessions? This is completely unfair to those of us who purchased tickets to the game. At least the people watching at home can mute their TVs. The Lions ought to think about their fans before choosing such an awful band to play at halftime.
Nickelback has canceled their show on October 12 at New Orleans Arena.
The cancellation was announced by Live Nation in a September 27 press release stating that the show had to canceled because of unforeseen circumstances.
Refunds on tickets can be obtained at points of purchase.
Also in the press release was the statement that New Orleans has always been one of Nickelback’s favorite tour stops and they were very sorry for any inconvenience the cancellation might cause. With all the recent hardships that the Gulf Coast people have endured, Nickelback was really looking forward to providing their fans there with entertainment and are hoping in the very near future to rock out in the Big Easy.
The Jonas Brothers in April had to cancel their scheduled show on October 6 at New Orleans Arena.
On October 30th Nickelback will wrap up their touring in support of “Dark Horse,” their album from 2008. Frontman Chad Kroeger has his eye already on the next record for the band. He said he is planning on starting writing new material for an album in February, and is hoping to start recording a new set next spring. He says so far he has around four songs ready. In terms of the material he is writing Kroeger said, the record company wants to push more accessible material always. However we always have a concern in terms of whether or not we will have enough rockers for the set when playing live.
Nickelback’s biggest obstacle for recording a new album could be the band members themselves. Kroeger said, everyone is at very comfortable stages in life in terms of having kids and their relationships. They are enjoying life. So I’m sure they will want me focusing my creativity in a new direction.
Chad Kroeger and the rest of Nickelback isn’t done with the “Dark Horse” yet, well, not for another two months.
The Canadian rock quartet will be saddling up the “Dark Horse” to hit the road again this September and October for a series of shows all across the US following their successful world tour last year in support of their 2008 release, “Dark Horse”.
Even after 120 shows worldwide, the band decided that a vacation is not an option.
Live Nation reported that all of Nickelback’s shows worldwide were sold out, moving more than 1.6 million tickets and making the band’s world tour one of the most top-selling and sold-out events of the past year.
The “Dark Horse” US tour will be launched in Nashville on September 14 and will hit 23 cities through the next couple of months till they close the tour in Las Vegas on October 30. Three Days Grace and Buckcherry will be tagging along as support acts.
“Dark Horse” landed at the 2nd spot of the Billboard 200 upon its release in 2008. The Robert “Mutt” Lange-produced set is the band’s sixth studio effort.

While still busy touring this spring, Canadian alt-rock band Nickelback has announced its plans to extend their current outing throughout this summer to perform in 30 US cities from July to September.
They are currently in the middle of a spring tour which involves US stops in the east and the mid-west in March, with a few Canadian stops in early April, then back to the US, where they will cap off the spring outing on April 23 in Columbia, SC.
Saving Abel, Papa Roach and Hinder – best known for their breakout hit “Lips of an Angel” – will be accompanying Nickelback throughout their US summer tour which will kick off with a show in Darien Lake, NY on July 10 and conclude with a show in Albuquerque, NM on September 9.
Tickets will go on sale on March 13 and a presale event will be held exclusive to Citi cardholders on March 10.
“Dark Horse” is Nickelback’s sixth album which was released last year and peaked at no.2 at the Billboard 200. It was produced by the same guy who worked with AC/DC, Def Leppard and Foreigner – Robert “Mutt” Lange.
The album’s debut single, “Gotta Be Somebody”, and its follow-up, “Something in Your Mouth” are both now streaming at the band’s MySpace page.
With the recent release of “Dark Horse”, Nickelback is on its way to promote their chart topping album all across the US with a few stops in Canada in partnership with Live Nation, spring next year.
They will be saddling off to Nashville, TN to kick off the tour on February 25. Then they will be coasting through the east of US with a few stops in Canada in early March and April. Fellow rockers Saving Abel and Seether will be joining the tour as support act for Nickelback.
Tickets will be available to the public on December 5 and the band’s fan club will be pre-selling tickets beginning on November 28, Friday. Citi cardholders can avail of early bird tickets on December 1.
“Dark Horse” hit the no.2 spot in the Billboard 200 upon its release last week. It is Nickelback’s sixth studio effort, following the successful “All the Right Reasons” album which produced hits like “Photograph”, “Far Away” and “Rockstar”.
This new release is expected to perform just as well or even better than “All the Right Reasons” did, especially now that they have solicited the services of music genius Mutt Lange, to produce the album. Lange has also worked with Def Leppard and AC/ DC.
“Gotta Be Somebody”, the album’s carrier single, is being widely received in various music genres and is constantly garnering generous airplay on radio and music channels. Listen to the track via the band’s MySpace page.
Chart topping rock act Nickelback is slated to extend their summer tour which will be launched tonight, June 28 in Canada, and will run through September 2 with a tour finale in Kansas City, MO.
The tour which was originally planned to cover only the months of June and July, will now also cover almost the entire month of August and a concluding show in September, to include more US cities in the trek and still with a few stops in the band’s native Canada.
Joining them for the North American leg of the tour are Staind for the July leg, Daughtry for July and August, and to take turns in the opening act slot in August are Puddle of Mudd, Yellowcard and Finger Eleven. For show and ticket details, log on to Roadrunner Records’ website.
The tour is still aimed at furthering the reach of Nickelback’s 2005 release “All the Right Reasons” which debuted at the top spot of the Billboard 200 and sold more than 315,000 copies during its first week. According to the band’s music label, “Reasons” had five chart topping singles: the album’s carrier single “Photograph”, “Far Away”, “Rockstar”, “Savin’ Me” and “Animals”.
All tracks from the said album are streaming at Nickelback’s MySpage page.
Still riding on the success of their fifth studio release “All the Right Reasons” (2005), Nickelback has just recently disclosed its plans to go on an 18-city US tour in late winter next year to further promote their highly successful album.
The tour will open up with a show in Tacoma, WA on February 20 and will conclude early in the spring in Orlando, FL on March 19. Breaking Benjamin, who just released their album “Phobia” in August and Three Days Grace whose album “One-X” surfaced June of this year, will both join the tour as support acts.
2006 has proven to be a busy yet highly successful year for Nickelback. Their 2006 album tour for “Reasons” sold close to 800,000 tickets amounting to two- or maybe three-digit million dollars in concert returns. And if that’s not enough, the band is also in the running for three awards in this November’s American Music Awards – Favorite Alternative Artist, Favorite Pop/Rock Band, Duo or Group and Favorite Pop/Rock Album for “All the Right Reasons”.
The album is to date, their most successful release with the singles “Photograph”, “Far Away”, “Rockstar”, “Savin’ Me” and “Animals” all achieving top-of-the-chart status. It also sold more than 300,000 copies in its first week alone.
