This year, Pink and Green Day will be returning to MTV’s Video Music Awards. They are both scheduled to perform music from their new releases during the ceremony to be held in New York City on September 13.
At last year’s Video Music Awards show, Pink sang “So What” from “Funhouse,” her October release. This year she will choose another one of the multi-platinum album’s tacks to perform at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall.
Meanwhile the band Green Day will be making their first appearance at the Video Music Awards since 2005. The band will be performing a song from “21st Century Breakdown,” their latest album. Three of the record’s tracks- “Know Your Enemy,” “East Jesus Nowhere,” and “21 Guns” are available now to download to use in the video game “Rock Band.”
Green Day and Pink are joining Muse and Taylor Swift, performers that were previously announced. Chace Crawford, “Gossip Girl” actor, Ne-Yo and Katy Perry are the first celebrity presenters that have been announced.
For the 14th time, the MTV Video Music Awards for 2009 will be held in New York City. Russell Brand, British actor and comedian, will be hosting the ceremony for the second year in a row.
Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs and The Bravery will provide support on the North American portion of the upcoming world tour of Green Day’s.
The pop-punk band will kick their tour off in Seattle,WA on July 3. Initial opening support will be provided by The Bravery until the July 25th show in Albany, NY. Beginning with the New York City July 27 date, Kaiser Chiefs will be taking over, with Franz Ferdinand then replacing them in Houston on August 8.
After wrapping up the North American tour in Inglewood, CA on August 25, Green Day will be heading over to Europe. Their overseas leg will run into November.
Green Day, consisting of band members Billie Joe Armstrong, guitarist/singer, Tre Cool, drummer, and Mike Dirnt, bassist, is supporting “21st Century Breakdown.” The new album was released earlier this month. It is the band’s first set in five years and eighth studio effort overall. They have been working on the album since early 2006. “Know Your Enemy,” the lead track from the album, is a Top 10 single.
In April Green Day performed their entire upcoming album on a California run of club shows.
“21st Century Breakdown,” despite only being out to stores for three days during its debut week, hit the No. 1 position on Billboard’s 200 chart. According to retail figures from Nielsen SoundScan reported by Billboard, the album sold 215,000 copies in its first week out. “Know Your Enemy,” the first single from the album, peaked at No. 43 on the Billboard Pop 100 chart, while topping the Hot Modern Rock Tracks and Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks charts.
“American Idiot,” the band’s previous studio album from 2004, debuted in the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s 200 chart while spawning five hit singles. Since its release the album has sold over 14 million worldwide copies. The set was also made into a musical. Director Michael Mayer, Tony Award winner, will be unveiling the show at Roda Theatre in Berkeley, CA on September 4. The rock musical will include all the songs from the album and will run through October 11. The venue’s website has tickets available for sale.
Despite the fact that Green Day’s “21st Century Breakdown” was only on store shelves for three days of its debut week, the first new studio album from the band since “American Idiot” in 2004 entered the US album chart in the No. 1 spot.
Released on Friday May 15 instead of the usual Tuesday, 215,000 copies of “21st Century Breakdown” were sold over the first few days of the album’s release, according to the retail sales figures from Nielsen that were reported by Billboard. During the first seven days out, “American Idiot” sold 267,000 copies.
“21st Century Breakdown’s” short debut week didn’t prevent the set from outdistancing its competition easily. The sound track “Hannah Montana: The Movie” was its closest challenger, selling 68,000 copies for the No. 2 spot.
The only other Top 10 chart debut for the week was “Crime Pays” from Cam’Ron, selling 43,000 copies in its first week out in stores for the No. 3 spot. “Fame” from Lady Gaga sold 41,000 copies for the No. 4 spot. “Unstoppable” from Rascal Flatts dropped one spot to No. 5 and sold 33,000 copies.
The Top 10 was rounded out with “Together Through Life” by Bob Dylan at No. 6, selling 31,000 copies; “Fearless” by Taylor Swift sold 30,000 copies at No. 7; “Epiphany” by Chrisette Michelle moved down to No. 8 after debuting last week at No. 1, selling 29,000 copies this week; “Deeper Than Rap” by Rick Ross sold 26,000 copies at No. 9; “while “Fantasy Ride” from Ciara sold a few hundred less copies than Ross for the No. 10 spot.
Green Day has revealed the venues for this summer’s North American trek in addition to details for this fall’s extensive European leg.
The North American portion will be kicking off in Vancouver on July 4, visiting several cities in Canada before dropping down to the US. The run of two months will be stopping in 37 cities across the coast, wrapping up in Los Angeles on August 25.
After taking a break for a month, Green Day will heading across the pond and undertake a European leg of 27 cities, including stands of two nights in London on October 23-24, in Birmingham on October 27-28 and in Manchester on October 20-31. On-sale ticket information will be announced soon.

Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has transformed the lyrics from Green Day’s seventh album into a story for theater. It will play at the Roda Theatre in Berkeley from September 4 until October 11. The venue’s website currently has tickets available.
The rock musical will be performed by the Tony winning playhouse Berkeley Repertory Theatre. According to a recent press release, the story follows its working class characters as they travel from the suburbs over to a Middle Eastern city in an attempt to seek redemption from a world that is filled with frustration.
In a recent statement, director Michael Mayer said, who would have imagined that one of the more funny, passionate, eloquent, poetic, theatrical and brutally honest responses to the world after 9-11 would come from a record by Green Day? This work of fierce intelligence, vision and passion is the heart beat of an American generation who are fed up.
Michael Mayer produced “Spring Awakening,” the Broadway smash hit as well, which featured Duncan Sheik music.
“American Idiot” includes all the songs from Green Day’s 2004 album. Steven Hoggett, award winning choreographer, sets the play in motion as well as several tracks from “21st Century Breakdown,” the upcoming release from the band. Their new studio set is set to be released on May 15. A world tour will follow.
