Chris Botti Extends Tour into 2010

Chris Botti, pop and jazz trumpeter, has added some extra new dates to his already long itinerary that stretches currently into the middle of May.

Botti has been touring on a regular basis since last fall. He will continue on his tour of North America with a performance on October 16 in Clearwater, Florida. The Portland, OR native since the last check has added an additional 22 stops to his forthcoming outing. It is set to currently crisscross the country, culminating with a Worcester, MA concert on May 15.

Botti closes out 2009 and will ring 2010 in with a twice nightly, intense three week residency at Blue Note in New York City.

Botti’s newest studio album, “Italia,” which was released last December, debuted on the Billboard Top Jazz Album chart at No. 1. He was nominated for a Grammy for the Best Pop Instrumental Album. “Italia” features guest vocalists including Paula Cole and Andrea Bocelli and was inspired by Italy’s romance.

Botti performed last fall with the Boston Pops as well as a whole array of musicians which included Yo-Yo Ma, Steven Tyler, Josh Groban and Sting. The event of two nights was filmed and recorded and then in March was released as a CD/DVD combo as well as audio disk and entitled “Chris Botti in Boston.” PBS TV also aired the concert in the spring during their annual pledge drive.

Rollins, Botti, Hancock Featured Artists at Newport Jazz Fest

For Festival Network’s first run at the JVC Newport Jazz Festival, it will bring in seasoned jazz musicians Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock and Chris Botti as this year’s headliners in the three-day, three-staged annual fest in Rhode Island.

For day one of the festivities, which is set to kick off on August 8 at the International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino, Chris Botti will be the event’s main act with support from R&B/jazz act Ledisi as opening act. August 9 or day two will have the fest staged at a different location but with the same headlining act, this time at Fort Adams still with Chris Botti, but he will be joined by a handful of other musicians such as the Dave Holland quartet, the Wayne Shorter quartet, Eric Harland, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Chris Potter and once again, Ledisi.

The final night of the fest, penciled in for August 10th still at Fort Adams, will feature Sonny Rollins and Herbie Hancock as headlining acts. Other artists also to be featured on the center stage are the Blues Project conceived by neo-soul act Anthony Hamilton, George Wein and the Newport All-Stars comprised of Anat Cohen, Jeff Ballard, Howard Alden and Esperanza Spalding. The second stage will feature Guillero Klein y Los Gauchos, while Spalding will also perform as the featured act on the third stage.

Apart from Botti, Ledisi and Spalding, Trombone specialist Fred Wesley will also be holding multiple performances throughout the festival. He will be performing throughout the weekend at Fort Adams, alongside funk-jam groups like Lettuce on Saturday and Soulive on Sunday.

Lucky group attendees can snag themselves a chance to perform on the third stage on the fest’s last day by submitting their original material to www.ourstage.com/go/newportjazz. The winning band will be announced on-the-spot on August 10.

Tickets to the three-day fest will be available starting tomorrow, May 8, at 9 AM. Those interested can get their tickets by phoning (877) 655-4TIX, or by logging on to the Festival Network website at www.festivalnetwork.com, or by personally heading to the Festival Network ticketing office along Aquidneck Avenue in Middletown.
