Vocal Rest Sidelines Celine Dion’s Las Vegas Run Through Mid-March

Celine Dion has been forced to cancel all of her scheduled Las Vegas performances through March 18 due to a weakness found in her vocal cords.

The singer, who is in the midst of a residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, announced the cancellations on her website yesterday. Ten shows will be cancelled in all.

After having trouble with her voice last week, Dion visited Dr. Gerald Berke at the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, who prescribed six to eight weeks of voice rest. She explains the situation in the post on her site:

I tried to sing at my sound-check last week, and I had no control of my voice whatsoever. We thought that after a few days rest I would improve but it wasn’t getting any better… I guess it was worse than I thought. I’m fortunate that I was able to see Professor Berke. He identified what was causing the problems I was having, and he assured me that with the amount of rest he prescribed, I would be back to 100%. Obviously this is the worst thing for a singer… not being able to do your shows. I feel worse knowing that I’m disappointing my fans. I’m so sorry… I hope they forgive me.

The diagnosis was a weakness in Dion’s right vocal cord, secondary to a viral illness. All performances from June 9 to August 19 will proceed as scheduled, the website reports. Anyone who ordered tickets to the cancelled shows with a credit card will be awarded a refund automatically, and anyone who paid cash should return to the original point of sale for a refund.

Dion began her Vegas residency in March of last year, and the stint is scheduled to run through 2014. The Canadian singer is expected to perform around 70 shows per year.
