Country singer Eric Church caused some waves with fellow country stars (and husband and wife) Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert in a recent interview with Rolling Stone.
In a profanity-laced interview with the magazine, Church first seemed upset about Shelton’s position as a judge on the Fox reality singing competition, “The Voice.”
After calling the show “‘American Idol’ gone mad,” he mentioned Shelton by name.
“Honestly, if [“the Voice” coaches] Blake Shelton and Cee Lo Green f**king turn around in a red chair, you get a deal?” the singer told Rolling Stone. “That’s crazy. I don’t know what would make an artist do that. You’re not an artist.”
As he continued, he seemed to still be taking swings at Shelton.
“If I was concerned about my legacy, there’s no f**king way I would ever sit there [and be a reality-show judge],” he added. “Once your career becomes something other than the music, then that’s what it is. I’ll never make that mistake. I don’t care if I f**king starve.”
Lambert was the first to address the situation as she took to her Twitter account. Lambert first received widespread recognition after she appeared on the reality television show “Nashville Star” in 2003.
“Thanks Eric Church for saying I’m not a real artist. Or @kelly_clarkson, @carrieunderwood & @KeithUrban. Your [sic] welcome for the tour in 2010,” she tweeted.
Shelton’s response was also on Twitter, but he had less to say than Lambert.
“I wish I misunderstood this,” he said.
After his interview was published, Church released a statement through his publicist addressing the issue yesterday.
“The comment I made to Rolling Stone was part of a larger commentary on these types of reality television shows and the perception they create, not the artists involved with the shows themselves,” he said in the statement. “I have a lot of respect for what artists like Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, and my friend Miranda Lambert have gone on to accomplish…. I apologize to anybody I offended in trying to shed light on the issue.”
Country music husband and wife team Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert will be among the headliners at the first-ever Watershed Music Festival later this year.
The three-day country music event will take place August 3-5 at the Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Washington. Music festival enthusiasts will recognize the venue as the same place the annual Sasquatch Music Festival is held every year.
The event is being billed as the “Northwest’s premiere country music festival,” and has a lineup to back up the claim. In addition to Shelton and Lambert, other notable artists scheduled to appear include Dierks Bentley, Dwight Yoakam, Kix Brooks, Sara Evans, Uncle Kracker, Brantley Gilbert and Thompson Square. Additional artists are expected to be announced soon, and a local stage will feature acts from around the region.
Fans will be able to campout during the festival, and a statement from the organizer, Live Nation, says fans can expect “late night sets, impromptu jam sessions, collaborations and more.” Tickets for the event go on sale May 25, and will be limited to 25,000 fans.
Live Nation promoter Brian O’Connell spoke in a statement about why the Gorge Amphitheatre is such a great location for the event.
“The Gorge provides a feeling that is impossible to recreate anywhere else,” he said. “It is truly a magical place and provides the perfect setting for a cool, eclectic country event. We wanted to create something that didn’t exist, from the caliber of artists to the camping to the atmosphere. I’m excited to be a part of it and see it all come together.”
The Sasquatch Festival has been held at the amphitheatre every year since 2002, and takes advantage of its terraced lawn seating. Other festivals to be held at the venue include Lilith Fair, Vans Warped Tour, Ozzfest, Creation Festival and Area:One.
This year’s CMA Festival is shaping up to be perhaps the biggest yet, as it was recently announced that Blake Shelton, Alan Jackson and Scotty McCreery will perform at the already star studded event. Dierks Bentley and Brantley Gilbert also were recently announced as performers.
Earlier this year it was announced that the festival lineup will include Carrie Underwood, Lady Antebellum, Braid Paisely, Luke Bryan, Zac Brown Band, Jason Aldean and Rascal Flatts. The event will be held at Nashville’s LP Field from June 7-10 this year, and additional performers are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
Additional daytime concerts will be held during the day at Riverfront Park, which is next to the stadium. Fans also can expect autograph signings, celebrity events, fan club parties, family activities and more.
Originally known as Fan Fair when it debuted in 1972, CMA Music Festival is one of the biggest country festivals in the country, and set a record last year when 65,000 country music fans attended the event. The Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau reports that the local economy receives around $30 million during the event.
The CMA also donates half the net proceeds from the festival to Keep the Music Playing, an organization that provides musical instruments and other supplies to public schools. Part of the proceeds also go to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s Words and Music Program. That program helps language arts and music teachers teach students the art of songwriting in the classroom.
Since 2004, the event has been filmed and later broadcast as a network television special. This year’s show, called “CMA Music Festival: Country’s Night to Rock” will be aired on ABC later this summer.
Black Shelton is the reigning CMA Male Vocalist of the Year. He was presented with the award at the ceremony held late last year.
Both the Stagecoach Festival and its sister festival, Coachella, both held annually in Indio, Calif., were in jeopardy of not being held or being postponed next year because of a request by a neighboring city’s council. But those scares have been put to rest, and the Stagecoach Festival is not only happening, it’s expanding to three-days instead of the traditional two (Coachella is also expanding to two weekends instead of one). This year the Stagecoach festival will be held Friday, April 27 to Sunday April 29, 2012.
Stagecoach, known for the high profile county music acts it attracts, will this year feature Brad Paisley, Jason Aldean, Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton and a reunited Mavericks, a band that has been broken up since 2003.
Stagecoach began as a two-day country festival to compliment the successful Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, which had started in 1999 and featured mainly alternative rock music. Since its inception, Stagecoach has been a two-day festival every year except 2008, when it was expanded to three days due to a reunion concert by the Eagles.
Other notable performers this year will include Alabama, Kenny Rogers, Martina McBride and Sara Evans. The festival will benefit the city of Indio, as well as charities like the Indio Youth Task Force, the Indio Teen Center and the Silverlake Conservatory.
The reunion of the Mavericks has been a big story in the country music world, and the group says that the Stagecoach date will be a part of a reunion tour, though no other dates have been announced. Initially formed in 1991, the Mavericks became known for hits such as “All You Ever Do is Bringing Me Down,” “There Goes My Heart,” and “Here Comes the Rain.” In the latter portion of the band’s career, they tended to find more success in the United Kingdom than in America.
Move over Kate and Will. The princess and prince of country music- Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton- are newlyweds now.
On Saturday night, the pair exchanged their vows in Boerne, Texas, near San Antonio, at Don Strange Ranch. Guests included Laura Bell Bundy, Dierks Bentley, Kelly Clarkson, Reba, Josh Kelley and Katherine Heigl.
Travis Howard, Lambert’s co-writer, tweeted brilliant wedding.
The celebration lasted late into the night and included a unique menu. The venison was harvested by the bride herself.
The country superstars have been a couple for six years. Last May, the 34-year-old Shelton proposed to Lambert in the woods close to her home in Tishomingo, Oklahoma.
At the time, the 27-year-old Lambert said, I’m very exciting about getting married. I want to be able to tell Blake that I can really love him for the rest of our lives, make him happy and be happy.
Shelton also wants to please. After he learned that his working as a judge for the hit series “The Voice,” based in L.A., had made Lambert feel neglected, the two decided they would spend most of May being together and hanging out.
I mean no family, no friends, just the two of us hanging out for most of the month. That should be good enough to where she will want to kill me once again and wish I’d return to work, he said laughing.
Fresh off his win at the CMT Awards, country singer Blake Shelton has added more shows in the U.S. to his summer tour currently in progress.
On June 11, the road trip will continue in Thackerville, OK and then stop at the CMA Fest in Nashville on June 13 before moving onto additional amphitheater, casino and festival performances across the nation. Shelton will be visiting 47 cities in North American in total before wrapping up in Lake Delton, WI on November 20.
Several city meet-and-greet packages are now available at Shelton’s website.
“Startin’ Fires,” the latest studio album from Shelton was related in late 2008. It peaked at the No. 34 spot on Billboard’s 200 chart. The set features “Bare Skin Rug,” a duet with Miranda Lambert, Shelton’s fiance. The album has produced two singles on the Top 10 country chart: “I’ll Just Hold On” and “She Wouldn’t Be Gone.”
On June 9, Shelton and Trace Adkins won CMT’s Collaborative Video of the Year Award for “Hillbilly Bone. Earlier this year, Shelton and Adkins were also awarded Vocal Event of the Year by the Academy of Country Music for the same effort.
