bjork Biography

Bjork, the Icelandic singer-songwriter, producer, composer and actress, was born on November 21, 1965 in Reykjavik, Iceland. Her influential solo work is comprised of two film soundtracks and seven solo albums.

She is known for having an eclectic musical style which draws on a wide array of musical genres, including folk, classical, electronic dance music, jazz and rock. She is highly acclaimed for having a distinctive voice.

Bjork's 1990 singles “Hyperballad,” “Army of Me” and “It's so Quiet” all charted on UK Top 10 chart. One Little Indian, Bjork's record label, reported that she has sold over15 million worldwide albums as of 2003. Bjork has received wide critical acclaim having won BRIT Awards (4), MTV Video Music Awards (4), MOJO Award (1), UK Music Video Awards (3) and a Polar Music Prize in 2010 from Royal Swedish Academy of Music to recognize her deeply personal lyrics and music, unique voice and precise arrangements.

Bjork has also received 13 Grammy Award nominations, one nomination from the Academy Awards and two nominations from the Golden globe Awards. Bjork was named Best Actress for her “Dancer in the Dark” performance at the Cannes Film Festival in 2000.

Bjork released “Debut,” her first solo album, in 1993. NME named it album of the year and in the U.S. it went platinum. She won Best International Newcomer and Best International Female at the BRIT Awards in 1994. Since then she has released five other albums: “Post” (1995), “Homogenic” (1997), “Vespertine” (2001), “Medulla” (2004) and “Volta” (2007). Her latest album, “Biophilia,” is scheduled to be released in 2011.
