The thrash metal band Anthrax was founded in 1981 in New York. The band was formed by Danny Lilker and guitarist Scott Ian. Since that time Anthrax has released 20 singles, ten studio albums and an EP that features Public Enemy. During the 1980s Anthrax was one of the most popular bands in the thrash metal world. When the thrash metal genre began to garner a large following during the middle to late 1980s, Anthrax was considered to be one of thrash metal's big four along with Slayer, Megadeth and Metallica. In 1985 the band signed with Island Records, becoming one of the fist thrash metal groups to be signed by a major label.
The band has had numerous lineup changes. After bassist Kenny Kushner and drummer Dave Weiss left, they both had several replacements. The first musicians to replace them were Greg Walls and Paul Kahn. Anthrax has also had several vocalists, including John Bush, Joey Belladonna and Neil Turbin. The only members to appear on each of the band's albums are Charlie Benante and Scott Ian. Bassist Frank Bellow has appeared on each album except for Anthrax's debut album. Current band members include lead singer Joey Belladonna, lead guitarist Rob Caggiano, bassist Frank Bello, guitarist Scott Ian and drummer Charlie Benante.
In late 1983 Anthrax released "Fistful of Metal," their debut album. The band followed it up with the release of "Spreading the Disease" in 1985. In 1987, their third studio set, "Among the Living," was released, which showcased the band's more experimental and humorous side. In 1988 the band released "State of Euphoria." The singles "Headbangers Ball" and "Antisocial" were heavily played on MTV. Anthrax released "Persistence of Time" in 1990. The album was much more progressive and darker than their previous work. The most recent album from Anthrax is "Worship Music," released in 2011.
