alice in chains Biography

The American rock band Alice in Chains was formed in 1987 in Seattle, Washington by Layne Staley, the band's original lead vocalist, and Jerry Cantrell. Current band members include William DuVall, Mike Inez, Sean Kinney and Jerry Cantrell. Although they are usually associated with grunge, the sound of the band incorporates acoustic and heavy metal elements. Since forming, they have released two DVDs, four compilation albums, two live albums, three EPs and four studio albums. The band is known for their distinctive vocal style that often included Cantrell and Staley harmonized vocals.

Alice in Chains became internationally famous during the early 1990s grunge movement, along with other bands from Seattle such as Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Nirvana. They were one of the 1990's most successful bands and sold more than 25 million worldwide albums, and more than 12 million US albums. Two of their albums reached No. 1 on Billboard's 200 albums chart- “Alice in Chains” and “Jar of Flies.” They also had 14 of their songs reach the Mainstream Rock Track chart's top ten and were nominated for eight Grammy Awards.

Alice in Chains never officially disbanded but did experience extended periods of inactivity caused by substance abuse, which culminated in Layne Staley's death in 2002. In 2005 the band reunited with William DuVall as their new lead vocalist. In September, 2009 they released their first album in 14 years, “Black Gives Way to Blue.” In March 2010 the RIAA certified the album gold.
